I'm 44, 45 in December. I am on the contraceptive pill, not because I'm sexually active, because I'm not, but because, since I got my period at 11, the PMT does my head in and I get mentally ill and even suicidal during that period, even when I am mentally well otherwise (I have serious mental illnesses). I don't have the week's break so I stop the whole cycle - I just take that hormone pills back to back - a common and very successful strategy and one that has worked for me for years. I had a break a short while ago as my doctor thought I might have a build-up of the uterine blood, but I hardly even had a period as a result.
What I am posting about is that I am now having very bad cramps every day and also break-through bleeding every day - and this is while on the Pill and I haven't forgotten any pills lately. Even if I have an episode of IBS which means the Pill goes down the loo, I would only experience a few dots of bleeding and no cramps. This is not common for me. Even during the many years I wasn't on the Pill, my cramps paled into comparison to the PMT issues and weren't really a problem.
I don't have any of the other sysmptoms of perimenopause or menopause like the hot and cold sweats or the vaginal dryness. But that wouldn't mean perimenopause is out of the question from what I have read.
It's just confusing, in terms of researching this, as all the information is provided in the context of woman NOT on the Pill.
I'm going to my doctor next week for this and other issues, but he's a hopeless doctor and doesn't offer proper care (I haven't moved from him yet as I've been overwhelmed with many things) and he often writes off medical concerns I have to hypocondria or hysteria as I suffer from mental illness only to have the conditions proved to be correct - over and over again. So I need to be my own GP, as well as listening to anything he has to say. Maybe the best thing would be to get a referral to a gyno.
This issue is of course important for every woman, but particularly fr me as I do suffer mental illness and this could be something that needs particular attenion from my mental health clinicians.

i think you should change doctor though if you can .you deserve the best care you can get. i feel the same way about my doctor too so i will be changing mine too and taking my own advice. .

There is a drug that can help perimenopausal women, but it is really expensive - I'm on the Disability Pension so can't affords it (I'm on 13 medications as it is and they cost me a lot of money). I will probably live with things the way they are until it becomes impossible to live with.
