A Child Abuse Survivors Group Community Group
We survived child abuse, but the pain still remains and so do the other effects which can last a lifetime. We are often unable to find adequate help, and we are seeking answers that can help us understand what happened so that we can go on to lead normal lives. (Please note that this is a group for child abuse survivors only. If you are a professional in the mental health...
-Ear piercing of infants (I have seen babies just a few months old with multiple piercings in each ear, done for their parent's ego satisfaction, most commonly done among Mexicans and Latin Americans)
-Female genital mutilation (commonly done among women from Africa or who belong to the Islamic religion; the justification is that if a woman's clitoris is cut off, she won't stray from her husband because she can no longer have pleasure from sex)
-Tattoos on minors (people under age 18; usually done by relatives or friends of the family, because the type of scarring called tattoos is illegal to perform on minors in many places)
Is the right name for this 'Body Modification Abuse,' Physical Mutilation,' or something else like that?
What is not done can be severely damaging to a child, they need the protection of the adults in their lives. Without a safe environment, children grow up with fear as the guiding force in everything they do...then retain this emotional bias all their lives.
Thanks for posting all these, it's helping me see how wrong my childhood was, and why I was always so "odd" as an adult.
-Parents loudly arguing and fighting while the children are forced to listen, even if the children are in another part of the house.
-Parents physically abusing each other or one parent physically abusing the other in a child's presence
-Abuse of a family pet
-A parent abusing a brother or sister of a child
forcing a child to eat until they become sick
forcing a child to drink alcohol, smoke, or do drugs
Just my personal example:
My mother made no attempt to create an actual bond between us, but she demanded all of the benefits. When she dropped me off at school, she demanded a kiss on the cheek and a hug. If I didn't give it to her, she stared at me like I had just stabbed her. If I said that I just didn't feel close enough to hug her or anything like that, she would explain to me that she didn't beat me and that her own parents never showed her any physical affection. If I had a problem and talked to a friend over the phone, she would demand to know what the problem was. She didn't have a good track record for appropriate reactions, so I didn't ever feel it was safe to fill her in on anything going on in my life. She would get emotional and DEMAND to know all my secrets because she was my mother. If I said I didn't feel close enough to her to share them, she would try to guilt me. She would tell me about how her own parents didn't have 1 on 1's with her because she had so many siblings and they were busy anyway. She behaved more like a bratty sister going on and on about how I tell my friends things that I don't tell her. She felt it was her right to be a confidant.
Hoarding, seemingly to cause the children to feel shamed.
