Would Never Do It But....
I read this story in the Washington Post about a nurse who went to another country to die. I can't remember the country, but she was perfectly healthy and visited friends and family before leaving. In this country they assist you in the dying process--something not done in the US and many other countries. She was only 75, but was afraid to get older and get sick. This was her answer. She decided to do this so as not to end up bed ridden one day and unable to have the option.
It's not something I would do, but only because of my devotion to living a Christ centered life. Otherwise, I'd wait till I was 80 and do the same thing.
Here's the thing, Everyday there's an article or TV doctor telling us how we can have a long life. You really don't have to read these articles because science has it all figured out. They'll operate, give you pills, hook you up to machines which will give you a long life, but sadly, not a happy full life. It sort of reminds me of those old 1950s horror movies where a person lives though their body had long passed away. This is achieved by keeping their brain in a jar.
Anyhow, my point is that science has found some darn good ways of extending us. Then you live, but you're only breathing. This nurse had seen it all as she'd cared for the elderlly. She explained that she didn't want a life like that. And in her country she realized that she didn't have the option of pulling the plug if something happened. Her answer was to pull the plug while she was still in excellent health.
Wow!

That sounds like an interesting read. I often wonder if some of the treatments people go through are really worth it? Yes they may extend life, but what about quality not quantity? Just don\'t have any answers. I am with you though. Wow Hugs to you, Michele
I saw that on the news, she worked in Palliative Care and saw people suffering so much that she wasn\'t going to go that way. Now we have choices, maybe if we\'d seen what she\'s seen, we would feel the same way.
I think if I am reading it right I agree. Existing is no what I want, I want living to the fullest. While health is always an issue you can live fully somewhat with health issues, but ones you can\'t that is not living to me.
