Dearest,
I got the driveway cleared and your car dug out so that I can take it to Jack’s tomorrow for a new headlight. I have fallen behind on the roof raking and the icicles are getting out of control. I was thinking that they are so pretty when they sparkle in the sun though. I’ll get caught up this weekend, I hope. The DMV says it’s time to renew your license, they want you to take an eye test. I’m betting you can pass it! Yes, I’m going to tell my eye test story. Yes, I know you’ve heard it a thousand times, so don’t listen.
A few years ago I received a notice that I had to take an eye test if I wanted to get my license renewed from the DMV. I grudgingly trudged down to the motor vehicles place and stood in line for the eye test. There were about 5 people in front of me. They had this new machine that looked a lot like a View Master, the old fashioned kind. Then I heard the lady tell the first person in line to “Look into the machine, read the third line on the chart” at which point the person called out “E,M,G,E,F,T,E,W”. Perhaps I should remember that thought I.. This routine repeated with each person in line, the same instructions, and the person calling out “E,M,G,E,F,T,E,W”! Finally the guy in front of me, the one with the seeing eye dog, stepped u to the machine. Same routine, and he called out “E,M,G,E,F,T,E,W”, perfectly. At which point he was instructed to go stand in another line. Now it was my turn! I stepped up to the machine and called out, “E,M,G,E,F,T,E,W”. The lady was miffed! She said I have to wait for her instructions and follow them! “Now look into the machine!” I had forgotten that part, so I looked into the machine. The she said “Read the third line on the chart” So I called out, “E,M,G,E,F,T,E,W”. She then told me to go stand in another line, right behind the blind man as fate would have it. I feel so much safer on the road knowing that our fine intelligent public servants are making sure that we can see well enough to drive.
I’ll try and find a phone number for the DMV, it’s not on the renewal form, they probably don’t want to be bothered. I’ll give them a call and ask them what to do in this situation. I know they won’t have a clue, after all, no one ever died before. I seem to be getting older, I’m trying to ignore it, if I don’t the memories will make me cry and I’ve had enough crying for one lifetime.
