Winter's end
I hope Winter is on its way out. We have had dreadful weather for well over a month. We were lucky to spend 2 weeks in Puerto Vallarta. We had a great visit with our friend and her son. Much of the time was spent at the Barracuda - a little restaurant on the beach. Winona knows everyone so we always got a great table by the water. We saw mother whales teaching their babies. Needless to say we loved the break. We foolishly thought that when we got home, the snow would be melting. Boy, was I wrong! We were in a deep freeze.
This grief journey is still a roller coaster, but a less dramatic one. I still shed tears fairly often but only briefly and get on with life. When we first lost Lisa, I really didn't feel I could go on with life. I have suffered from depression for most of my life I wondered whether it was worth it to hang in here. Andrew and I made a pact - I wouldn't do anything rash if he didn't. I am happy to say that we are both alive and well.
For the first few years after Lisa died, I felt the need to be busy all the time so I volunteered. Actually I went back to work soon after but I was filling in until they hired a permanent manager so the job ended. It was only when I was 'doing' stuff that I felt remotely like me. I then continued to be busy volunteering and filling in when needed for a continuing care company - doing orientations, and filling in for managers. in addition to my committee and board volunteering. Now, I am rather worn out and reevaluating what I am going to do with my remaining days.
I am at peace now being a couch potato. I see my friends - in fact we hosted a Mexican dinner on Saturday. We often have an ethnic dinner after we come home from other countries. Joe is the cook and I get to visit and drink wine. I enjoy the camaraderie. I always feel like Lisa is there - she loved evenings with friends. However, I no longer feel the need to be doing stuff. I feel a pang of guilt at times but the feeling passes.
I am working on staying healthy. I walk as often as I can as I love the sound of the birds - Lisa is saying "Hi Mummy". If anyone sees me when the birds start to sing, they probably think I am a bit demented. I say "Hi Lisa". Joe and I go to a seniors' exercise class on Monday - we have a great instructor who talks for an hour as we do 30 minutes of aerobics and the rest strenthening with bands and weights. The class is not the 'sit and be fit' sort of exercise. We are dripping with sweat at the end of the session.
I have also started to meditate again. For a long time, I couldn't sit still without breaking down in tears.
Photos of our beautiful granddaughter and great granddaughters bring a smile and warm my heart.
Of course, life goes on. At our age, we encounter more losses. A friend's husband was diagnosed with lung cancer, in addition to having had bowel surgery. My dear nursing classmate is having her third surgery after hip relpacement today. My neighbour's mom is in hospice care. My daughter-in-law's dad is going into a memory care centre as he has Parkinsons Disease and Dementia. So I am reminded that I won't be here forever. I am thankful that, so far, I am healthy except for the odd ache and pain and acid reflux. My friends and I laugh as we compare our ailments.
Lisa is always on my mind and in my heart.
Lisa: I miss you always and love you forever. Mummy

I have been thinking of you, Marlene, and knew that you had your vacation time. Your journal is so reflective of your path and I found myself nodding as I have felt so much of what you are feeling as well. Thank goodness we know that others truly do "get it" and that we are not alone.
It feels as if you are in an accepting and reflective season and going with what is and making the very most of it. Isn't it wonderful to be able to share savory meals with one another and I often too feel Douglas at our gatherings and or when I'm with the Little's. As if he pops in for a bit to visit and then is on his way.
You keep talking to those birds as I do the same and have told you often when I'm reminded of Lisa. One of the most special connections we have here is with one another and our children. Today I saw a dragonfly and instantly thought of Sue and Cindy, Doug and Brett's mom's and will let them know.
Happy you are home safe and sound and moving about your life as gently and intentionally as you can. Good for you too to be doing your exercise as I try to do the same daily and feel SO much better for it.
Much love and warm aloha to Lisa's mummy from Douglas and me always,
XO Joanie
Marlene....our beautiful and fascinating world traveler! I love hearing stories of the many wonderful places you and Joe visit....and am jealous! So glad you had a great time in Puerto Vallarta and it's always nice to have well known locals helping get those best tables! We have dear friends who will soon be moving to the beach in South Carolina, and though I will miss them, I must admit I'm a bit excited that we'll have beach buddies to visit.
I'm sure people often wonder if I've lost my mind as I go about my day talking to Kala. But shoot if I care! We will talk to them for all of eternity!!
Glad you're home safe and sound and praying for the snow to melt quickly into a glorious spring and summer for you.
Enjoy your couch potato days!!!
Big love,
Teri
Marlene, as I read your journal it took me back onto the journeys we have all been through. Life certainly gives us twists and turns. I am certainly ready for winter to come to an end as well but will be wishing in vain as we are due for a big storm here in Colorado tomorrow. I am rambling but as I read through the tools you used on your journey and how one tool may help at one point but not another. (I guess I am searching to help two of my friends who have had devastating losses in their families lately).
Your travels and arrival home with traditional ethnic dinners with friends sounds wonderful. I also envy your grandchildren and great grandchildren. I think we are all slowing down and yes, more losses are on the way. Big sighs! But in the meantime, let’s live and let’s celebrate our kids and keep their ,precious memories alive!!!
Hugs,
Leda
Hi Marlene,
Loved seeing your pictures of Puerto Vallarta - we will be there on Saturday for 12 days - so looking forward to it.
Time just keeps moving forward, doesn't it? I love that you talk to Lisa - it has been a journey for me to say anything to Jennifer, about Jennifer because I start to cry and there are days I just am tired. Your journals are encouraging to me and I appreciate you sharing your heart and journey.
I'm glad you are home safe, but sorry the snow has not melted!! Take care of you, Marlene - I love reading your journals! Hugs to Lisa's mom!!

Hello Marlene, I know what you mean. I miss Ed always but it is a gentler journey. It’s so hard to be alive after our child passes but I’m proud of you and Andrew for choosing life.
I too talk to the animals when I walk. I feel close to Ed when I’m in nature. I say hi to him whenever I feel him so I’m sure my neighbors think I’m odd. But that’s ok.
Sending you and dearest Lisa lots of love, Linda
As you know my son and most of my friends are in Spokane, Wa and cousin Nancy in Superior, Mt...so I have been watching the weather closely there...boy it sure has been rough there this winter...record snowfalls, # of days it snowed and frigid weather. Having lived there myself, I feel your pain--lol.
I so love your sense of humor, adventure and viewpoints on life. You are a jewel in my day.
Our bonds, although rooted in pain and dispair, have evolved into richness in my life...love you and Joe, to the moon and back.
Love,
Ann, mom of Daren
Sounds like a wonderful trip! I love reading about all your trips. Lucky gal! I am a couch potato too often and sometimes feel I can't leave the house! I do not like feeling this way but it is what it is!
Much love and hugs,
xoxoxo Joan and Brandon
