Wildfires and Drought
Wildfires – the result of burning vegetation such as grass, bushes and trees – are devastating disasters that threaten people’s lives and their homes. But in good conditions they can also rejuvenate forests, restoring biodiversity and providing a natural resource.
As we enter the spring wildfire season, the Florida Forest Service is warning residents to avoid burning leaves, limbs and other yard waste this year.
Climate Change
Wildfires are a natural part of many ecosystems, but they also release a lot of carbon dioxide, methane and other greenhouse gases into the air. However, the plants that re-colonise the burned areas can remove some of these emissions from the atmosphere, so the impact on climate is generally neutral.
