Why Do Our Teeth Cover With Plaque?

The answer to this question seems obvious. We process food with our teeth and its tiny particles stay and collect on our teeth. Besides this, there is another important factor and that is bacteria. Our mouths are inhabited by these creatures and when we eat, we feed them too. They multiply, die, and leave waste like any living thing. The waste from their activity also contributes to plaque deposits on our teeth.
To remove dental plaque, we brush our teeth. However, sometimes it doesn’t help much and the plaque keeps collecting. It becomes hard over time and turns to tartar that destroys the health of our teeth and gums. Why does it happen so that even brushing doesn’t help with tartar buildup?
There are several causes for oral health problems related to dental plaque:
Poor oral hygiene
You brush your teeth twice a day and think you do enough to keep your teeth clean and healthy? That’s a mistake. You also need to floss your teeth because a toothbrush can’t reach in between teeth while bacteria can. And even this may not work if the movements of your toothbrush don’t remove the entire plaque. Your family dentist will teach you how to avoid such situations with the help of proper brushing technique.
Poor diet
Modern people don’t eat enough hard foods. In most cases, our food is soft and processed. Such cooking makes the food sticky and there are more leftovers on the surface of your teeth after it. Chewing a hard fruit or vegetable was perhaps the first “brushing” of people’s teeth. It is still relevant today to keep your teeth cleaner.
Irregular bite
If your teeth are uneven or grow wrong, they create places where you just can’t reach with your toothbrush. In these places, dental plaque will collect and quickly turn into hard tartar.
Missing visits to your dentist
Visiting your dentist twice a year is a must. But how many people really do this? A popular opinion that you don’t need a dentist until your teeth hurt is outdated but many people still think it’s true. Some are just afraid of dentists. Lack of attention to your oral cavity puts your dental health at risk.
Mouth dryness
There are many causes for mouth dryness. Most of them are systemic diseases but sometimes this can also happen to you if you don’t hydrate properly. This is one of the many reasons to drink enough water.
Dental tartar is dangerous because it can make you lose even healthy teeth. How does it happen? Bacteria contained in it ruin the dental ligament. This ligament is impossible to restore. You can restore a tooth or even bone tissue but if this ligament is damaged and you do nothing about it, the chances to lose a tooth are high.
There is also a chance of developing tooth decay under the tartar layer. The buildup won’t even let your doctor see that your tooth needs help. This is why it’s very important to remove tartar regularly and not let it turn into a stone.
