Why ask how I am?

Why ask if you don't want to hear the truth? Yes I usually say I'm ok or fine, especially to more casual acquaintences. But if my family or close freinds ask when I have a bad morning I usually tell the truth. Probably a mistake, I will have to lie all,the time smile and say we'll thank you.
