Why Are Musicals So Popular?
He's achieved the most success in musical theatre and runs one of the largest theater companies in London. He can be blamed for creating the longest running musical generation ever and the highest grossing in history. The Phantom of the Opera celebrated its 10,000th Broadway performance on 11 February 2012 which is the first musical to ever to do so and it's still going strong now. His talents at generating musicals are legendary and long may they last.
Les Misérables is another musical which has been operating for more than 20 decades. More than 60 million people around the globe have seen the stage musical in over 40 countrys. If you'd like a great cry, then visit your theatre and watch it.
The history of musicals goes quite a way. I once visited the Amphitheatre close Taormina in Sicily and you can bet it saw its own fair share of musicals in its time. The Romans are thought to have reproduced the Greek theaters' and performed in enclosed wooden constructions. They attached metal chips to the shows to enhance the sound of their dance. I am guessing these would be classed as the very first tap shoes.
There is something simply fantastic about musicals when they are performed well. As a kid the most recorded and watched movies on TV for me were musicals. "The Wizard of Oz" "Mary Poppins" and "Greece" were my favorite; even now I could sing along to all the songs and totally adhere to the spoken dialog. I remember spending hours perfecting the exact skip Dorothy will down the yellow brick road! Subsequently there was "Annie", "Dirty Dancing", "Fame" and "Flashdance", the list continues. The more I think about it the more I realise I had been brought up on musicals.
But what is it about musicals which make them so popular even now? I think it's only because they use dance and song to enhance a story. However, I think it takes a special sort of director and choreographer to generate a musical work. Having seen lots of productions of the same musical it seems the success is actually down to how well it is produced. A couple of years ago I took my mother to see "We will Rock you" and it was just wonderful. It actually provides you the feel good factor.
I can not wait for the upcoming big musical to reach the point. I have always wanted to burst into song and dancing whist doing my weekly shop at Tesco's! Maybe I want to arrange this, get a group of friends, prepare a dancing and have some music ready. Soy una taza bet it would make all of the shoppers stop and watch and give them the feel good factor that all the best musicals provide you.
