Who He Was

I wrote this poem at 3:20 am this morning.  It's an outside look at me.

                               WHO HE WAS

This poem was written about a man
Who lived and adventurous life
He never felt he was truly loved
He struggled up hill, all his life

HE WAS born a weak little baby
He was too small and frail they said
For two weeks, he barley clung to life
An incubator was his bed.

HE WAS given a descriptive nickname
That's "Pee Wee" the nurses would say
His parents took his twin brother home
But "Pee Wee" would have to stay

HE WAS a fighter back then in forty four
He caught his twin before they were two
His twin brother was his mother's pet
And why, he never knew

HE WAS a child who fought for acceptance
He wanted his mom to be proud
But no matter his efforts, he seemed to fail
So, he joined the other crowd
HE WAS in a way, a gifted child.
Music calmed him in a special way
He would listen when his mom played the piano
Then he would set down and play

HE WAS determined to play the piano
He started when he was five or so
He listened to records by Hazel Scott
Fats Waller and Nat King Cole

HE WAS then, soon a troubled teen
Got in fights, got drunk, and wrecked cars
He fought with the law quite often
Played piano in taverns and bars
HE WAS never loved by the girl he wed
Even though he loved her so
So, in December, of Seventy Two
He knew that he had to go
HE WAS an outcast, in his family's eyes
A druggie, a Biker, a Boozer
A case of beer, a fifth of gin each day
A failure, worthless, a loser
HE WAS an admirer of Jerry Lee Lewis
So, he copied some of his style
Played piano as much as 6 nights a week
Tried to make his life worth while

HE WAS known for his God given talent
To Nashville he was twice asked to go
Web Pierce's manager, gave him his card
But, "Pee Wee" always said "no"

HE WAS  a man who suffered great loses in life
The 70's and 80's were bad
Lost his home in a fire, his wife in Divorce
And Finally, he lost his dad

HE WAS a dad, a brother, and husband
A musician, a poet and friend
An encourager, a helper, a compassionate heart
On his word and trust could depend

HE WAS a man with a love for others
His deep voice easily heard in a crowd
When his mom passed away in Ninety nine
Finally he made her proud

HE WAS the featured musician
At his mother's funeral that day
He sat down at the piano and played for her
Before she was carried away

HE WAS shot, HE WAS stabbed, in his lifetime
HE WAS slandered and broken, you see
I've followed his life for Sixty Six years
I know him, because HE WAS me!
