Whatever happened to community spirit?

The strangest thing has just happened. Now, I know that 'in this day and age' you can't go around trusting all and sundry but I'd like to think I'm quite a good judge of character.I was sat here playing bejeweled (don't panic, no hope of me ever getting the high score!!) when the doorbell rang. So, dressed in my dressing gown, looking like a million dollars, I opened the door. Standing there is a Polish man, teary eyed, looked knackered and who was soaked through due to the pooring rain. He was clean (as you can be in tha situation), wasn't drunk and he wasn't asking for money, but said he hadn't eaten for three days and had been sleeping out in the open (namely over under the trees at the local football field). He asked if I could perhaps give him a sandwich or bread or something. So, me being me, and seeing a deperate human being on my doorstep, I went off to make him a sandwich. (Left my Dad on the doorstep with him - I'm not that stupid!) I chucked in a tube of jaffa cake things (from Lidl..we're only cheap!) and a big bottle of water. Also put a couple of quid in the bottom of the jaffa cake bag (call me a mug, but I was trusting my instincts here). He was ever so grateful and I watched him leave. He went over and crouched on the grass verge at the other side of the road and ate the rolls I'd made. I was feeling bad because we have absolutely nowhere that he could have gone (all my dad's tools and the like are in the garage, so that's a no). Then, just as I was trying to find some contacts in the Polish community here, my dad came back downstairs and said that he'd been picked up by the police. Not arrested, but someone must have called them. OK, fair enough, if he'd been knocking on doors and causing a problem, but where on earth has all the human kindess gone?! Well, I'm glad I did my little bit and I'd like to think that someone would do the same for me if I was ever at rock bottom. People have such a negative attitude towards their fellow humans now - not everyone out there is a knife wielding con merchant...some people just need a bit of help. Perhaps something worth bearing in mind?Apologies for the rant!! Just needed to get it off my chest! I won't stop thinking about it for some time now...good job I believe in karma eh?!

perhaps someone rang the police as they were worried about him. the police could find him a shelter to stay at so he would have a roof over his head and get a meal. thats what i\'d like to think anyway. and good for you for helping him! shame more people aren\'t like you. so good on you and your dad!

Good on you!!! If he was asking for anything other than food you may have reason to be cautious but he was asking for food I wouldn\'t have been able to turn him away, I like to think I would have gone and made him a sandwich like you!

This may sound crazy to some folks...but I beleive there are angels amongst us. The homeless man on the corner with a sign could be homeless, a professional beggar or an angel \"just checking in\" to see what we do.
