Rosin and other extracts are becoming more populair by the day. You can find them in most dispensaries and social media is full of detailled pictures and videos of this yellow goo. Especially videos of rosin being pressed are populair and these often inspire people to press their own. When it comes to pressing your own rosin, choosing which temperature is best to extract with maybe the most widely debated variable in the rosin community. The first step to selecting the right temperature to perform your rosin extraction will depend on your starting material. What's more, a best rosin press machine can help you more.













Type of pressing material

The most important factor of choosing the right temp is knowing what kind of material you press. When pressing flower, you warm up the cannabinoids and waxes and push them out of the plant material. This could take quite some as it needs to warm up the whole plant material before it can be pushed out.


On the other hand, if you are pressing hash, the material is already filtered and it takes less heat to push out the mixture of cannabinoids and other compounds. This kind of rosin often tastes better as there are less evaporated terpenes.














Here is rough guide that should help you with finding the right temperature to make rosin from your medical marijuana buds:



  • Lower temperatures (250°F- 300°F) = more flavor/terpenes, less yield, end material is more stable (shatter-like consistency)

  • Higher temperatures (300°F- 335°F) = less flavor/terpenes, more yield, end material is less stable (sap-like consistency)


Some extraction artists claim the best way to make Rosin is at 302°F (150ºC), with 4-6 seconds of pressure, using just 0.25 gram samples in each run — but this process has not been confirmed by Medical Jane or any other official studies.

Even with the right, fresh material, it’s possible for your rosin to turn black because of the heat. So the second thing you should check out is if you are using the right temperature when pressing. The #1 reason Rosin gets black/dark is because of old cannabis material or a too hot pressing temperature. Also when pressing for too long, your rosin will be too long exposed to the heat which could destroy some cannabinoids.


Finding the right temperature is pretty difficult and if you find the right one for a particulair strain, it could be too hot for other strains. All strains require a different temperature to get the best results so there isn’t just one good temperature for all. Yet there are some guidlines you could follow that you should start with. The main rule is: The lower temp, the more clear your rosin will get. But lower temperatures often lead to a lower yield so you need to find a good balance in quality & quantity.


One good way to find this balance is by simply starting at 190 °Fahrenheit (87.8 °Celsius). When pressing at this temperature, take a good look at your bag/nug. If it takes very long (minutes) for the rosin to come out and the return is very small, the plates are probably too cold for this flower material and you should adjust the temperature a little higher. (around 10-15 °Fahrenheit)


After every press you should compare the results in colour and weigh how much the return is. Once you are happy with the product, keep it at this temperature and time but remember: every strain is different so a temperature may not give the same good results on different strains.













What do I need to consider when buying a rosin press?

First, consider your available workspace:



  • If noise is going to be a problem, avoid pneumatic presses

  • If space is limited, pay careful attention to the unit’s dimensions

  • Where are you going to put the press? Will it be able to support the weight?

  • Will you often need to move the press or take it elsewhere?


Next, think about how much starting material you’ll need to process, what kind and how often:



  • Is manual operation going to become tiring or too time consuming? Consider a pneumatic or electric press.

  • Is the press versatile enough to handle different kinds of starting material well? The more adjustable the pressure and temperature, the more likely you’ll get good results with everything from trim to hash to flower


Finally, what end product are you looking for?



  • Some presses allow much finer control over heating and pressure than others, which allows you to achieve a wider range of rosin consistencies. If you like to experiment and perfect, bear that in mind
