What Is a Lag Bolt?

As homeowners become more and more accustomed to home improvement projects and renovations, the number of DIY-ers is increasing. Whether you are a do-it-yourself homeowner or a professional contractor, chances are you will have to use some type of hardware to fasten materials together. One type of hardware often used in building is a Lag Bolt.

Essentially, a lag bolt is a screw with large threads that are designed to grip the inside of material. The screw can then be tightened with a wrench or socket, creating a tight and strong connection between materials. Lag screws are durable, lasting a long time and can handle heavy loads. However, they do require pre-drilling and can split wood if not installed properly. They also cannot handle as much weight as a through bolt can.

Lag bolts are available in many sizes and finishes. They can be found in the construction section of most hardware stores. They can be purchased in either a smooth or hammered head style. A smooth head is glossy and flat, while the hammered style has little indents on the surface that makes them look more rustic and handmade.

When deciding on which size lag bolts to purchase, it is important to consider how much load the bolt will be bearing and what your vision for the final build looks like. It is recommended that all lag bolts have washers on both ends to help provide a stronger connection between the screw and the materials it is being fastened to. It is also a good idea to stay away from bolts that have any numbers or markings on them, as these are generally not aesthetically pleasing in the end build. At Old West Iron, we always make sure that our lag bolt supplies come in the exact style that you desire.
