What do you do with old journals?
I've been deep cleaning my closet for several hours this day and it's time to quit for the day. It's not done, but I'm exhausted, both mentally and physically.
I've been uncovering a lot of "time bombs" and memory triggers as I continue on my deep cleaning and decluttering projects.
Journals. I have kept a hand written journal off and on through much of my adult life and now I have quite a collection of them in various bound forms.
It's interesting to note that I'm finding a great deal of writing and artwork that I did in the 90s - right up until around 98 and that's when we first got a home computer. Ever since then the artwork has greatly diminished and the writing has dwindled too. I think it's because I'm getting it all out on the Internet. Same with cards and letters - nobody does real letters via the postal service anymore. Everything is electronic now. It must sound funny to people born in the last two or three decades. They've never really known a time when digital only had to do with your fingers.
I've been pondering what I will do with all these old journals, and I've come to the conclusion that I will destroy them. If they were anything that might be of interest or use to anyone at any point in time, I might keep them, but they are all totally self centered ramblings about things that don't matter anymore.
I think that reviewing them will do me more harm than good. I sample some bits here and there and find myself reliving the angst and turmoil that was then. Troubles with co workers. Angst about work. Obsessing over weight issues... LOL to the last as I just read one obsessional entry of when I was 135 pounds. Ha! It was 20 years ago, but I would give my eye teeth to be that "fat" again. But it just goes to show that some things never change.
