What are Vascular Lesions?
We all would have noticed the veins on our wrists, visible either in red or purple color. But sometimes they appear on our face and legs too. Now when it comes to our face, we cannot tolerate a small pimple and its mark. So no way we would be ok if there were veins on them! These veins that appear are blood vessels that are visible through the layer of our skin and are commonly called vascular lesions. Types of vascular lesions
Spider veins: Smaller in size, these have twists and turns and are clearly visible underneath the skin in either a red or purple color. They typically appear on the legs and face. Major reasons why they appear include:
- Obesity
- Heredity
- Common among professionals who stand a lot like nurses, teachers, etc.
- Hormonal influences
- A history of blood clots
- Other causes reported include injury to the skin, trauma, or exposure to harmful ultraviolet rays.
Telangiectasia: In appearance, they look like fine threads of red lines or as web-like patterns on the skin and therefore are sometimes called spider veins. Very often, they appear in clusters and are formed gradually. When they appear on one’s body, they can be easily spotted! In many cases they have been reported to have appeared on lips, nose, eyes, fingers and cheeks. As mentioned above, they appear gradually and can worsen with the usage of beauty products that cause irritation to the skin.

Major symptoms include:
- Pain
- Thread-like patterns or red marks on the skin
- Itching
The exact cause that triggers the development of telangiectasia is unknown. However, scientists believe that they may be due to genetic or environmental factors or even due to the combination of both.
Port wine stains: This type of lesion is commonly called a firemark. Port wine stains are discoloration of the skin which is generally caused by a capillary malfunction. They are widely seen to appear on the face, but can also appear anywhere on the body. In the early stages, like when the person is a child, these lesions appear in pink, and as the child grows they turn red or purple in color.
Hemangioma: Colloquially referred to as the “strawberry mark”, Hemangioma is normally considered as a birthmark. They usually appear at birth and disappear after a few months.
All of the above mentioned vascular lesions are harmless, but people tend to get them removed as they pose a hindrance to their beauty. A commonly used method to remove them is by using laser treatments.
