Well, this is new...

I went down to my mother's house expecting that I was going to meet up with my brother and either help with my mother or help my brother to liquidate her assets in preparation for selling her house to set her up in a nursing home or some such, however, that is not what did happen.
Instead of staying with my mother, I will be taking over my mother's house. They do not expect that she will be allowed to come home, and she wants me to live in her house instead of staying there to take care of her or finding an apartment.
I have strong, mixed feelings about this. As I can no longer stay at my house, which is all but lost now, having a decent place to live is a godsend. I think that we could do well there for a time, and once we arrange things to be more comfortable for us, the girl and I could do quite well.
It is really hard, though, to think that my mother might never be able to come home again, though.
