Well, it is Monday...
Didn't want to risk taking my mother down the front stairs in the wheelchair, and they were the least steep, so I called and arranged for transport van to take her to her doctor's appointment.
The van arrived an hour late, and refused to take her down the stairs - I had to ask the neighbor to help me get her down the stairs, anyway, and if I had asked him in the first place, I'd have taken her in my car in the first place.
When we had driven the ten minutes to the doctor's office, instead of the van pulling into the parking lot of the facility, the van started driving circles around the neighborhood - and I lost them somewhere along the way.
After searching around for them, I finally parked and found the doctor's office, and my mother was sitting there in her chair waiting. She was an hour and a half late for her appointment, so we had to wait for the later appointments to go in first, and my mother wanted to go to the ladies, and while we were in there, the driver came in and asked if we wanted a return trip.
Guess what I told her.
We weren't in the doctor's office long when the doctor told me that my mother had to go back into the hospital and would need to go into a nursing home afterwards, because she was going to need 24 hour nursing care and supervision - and after spending nearly 2 days with her I resoundingly agree.
Over the last three months my mother has declined steadily until now she is completely incapable of contributing to her own care. Her level of confusion is so dramatic that she could easily endanger herself, and even if she were only here at night, it might be too dangerous.
After her getting up at 1:00 in the morning, getting herself into the wheelchair (and then forgetting why she got up), and tooling around the house, I'm certain it would not be long before she had an accident while everyone else was sleeping.
I want her safe and cared for. I can do the cooking, cleaning, laundry, shopping, etc., but I cannot do these things for her as easily if I cannot leave her alone for fear that she will do herself harm if she's left alone.
I'm hoping that the medical treatment can help her recover somewhat, but I fear that she is at the end of things.
