Well, got through that...
Well, 10 am, I went and talked to the Landlord. I told him who I was, told him what was happening... he was shocked. Just a few days ago, he said, my X was coherent. He assured me that the truck, boat and camper had been sold to him over time... kind of a mutual agreement. The X gets to use it whenever he wanted, payment covered rent. When I said I would be willing to pay the back rent, the Landlord said it wasn't necessary... he intended to use the things he bought and that the room was now cleaned and ready to be returned to whenever my X was recovered. Their agreement means rent is paid up to date until February. What a nice guy... and I'm glad I didn't have to come up with any money.
Noon, I had dinner with my son and his family. Afterward, we drove to the hospital. At the end of their road, my daughter-in-law realized she forgot her purse, texted me to keep going. I got to the hospital about 20 minutes ahead of them, went right up to the ICU and told the nurse who I was. Thank God, she said... the X gave them old information during his arrival regarding family and they were trying to find someone who could make decisions. I think it was because he didn't want any family to know. When my son arrived, they immediately had him go in while I provided the nurses with the paperwork that is still good... still allows me to make decisions on the health care. I immediately told the nurses to let my son have full involvement. They then called the doctor who gave us the rundown over the phone...
The rehab story was false in that it wasn't what precipitated this event. The landlord had found the X lying on the floor of his motel room, unable to get up. He'd been lying there for at least 2 days. Sores had developed and became infected, deeply infected. The landlord helped him dial 911. As they were waiting for the ambulance, the X agreed to go into rehab then.... but the landlord had no idea how serious my X's condition was becoming.
He's gone into severe liver failure, extreme swelling in his midsection, extreme swelling of his tongue as well which is why they had to do the feeding and breathing tubes. He's sedated and restrained because he kept trying to remove the tubes. I told the nurses he had a fear of the tubes as well - that was horror to him - but we realize that it was necessary. The living will states that tubes are to be removed only if unconsciouness is permanent or death is imminent and the doctor said there's still a good chance he could recover, but that there also is as much of a chance he could take an immediate turn for the worse, so at the present time the tubes are necessary. And on top of this, he's been having DT seizures from alcohol withdrawal. Right now, it's impossible to tell how much damage has been caused. And so we wait....
I dealt with it very well... I was much calmer than I thought (or maybe it's numbness?) And I'm SO PROUD of my son... he was calm through the entire thing, provided the doctor with more information than I would have remembered... he's turned out to be a good man. Keep them both in your prayers this week please...
