Watching TV programs about rapists and the horror they perpertrate

I just finished watching a show called I.D. Investigation Discovery.  The story was about 2 men, one who was in jail for the rape of a woman and the other I think was his brother in law.I find watching shows such as these just literally makes me sooooooooo angry and triggers me.  I sit watching it enraged.  Enraged that there is so much evil out there when it comes to rape.  I am on a constant basis appaulled by the violence I see perspertrated towards woman specifically.  I am not discounting the men who also are abused.  As I see here on DS many men are abused as well and I hold them in my heart as well for their continued healing. I am reminded of what I heard last week at the Take Back the Night at our local YWCA which is an evening where suvivors tell their story of sexual abuse and rape.  The person who spoke was a male.  He is director of a Rape Crisis Center in another county here in PA.  He said and I quote" 99% of all rapes, and sexual abuse is perpertrated by men.  He addressed the audience with this question, "do we question why so many woman are sexually assaulted or do we more so question why men perpertrate these hideous crimes towards woman?  Yes, this is an issue for woman but moreso for men.  Why the violence?  His comment was that if more men would be gentle, kind, caring, and be that in the presence of men instead of what I see, the macho, the stud mentality, the disrespecting woman, be they wives or girlfriends in front of other men, then just maybe we would not have the violence that still prevails in our culture and in other cultures. I am sickened by what I see on TV.  I sit here with a heavy heart, but also with much anger toward what I see every day toward my gender.  I feel helpless at times because I want to make a difference in the lives of those who have been hurt, opressed and abused. I want to scream, STAND UP FOR YOURSELF.  Of course as I have seen it takes a long time to get to that place that I will never, ever allow ANYONE  to ever hurt me again, be it words or deeds. Oh, how I wish I could guide, teach those woman who are still at a place of helplessness regarding their abusers be it domestic violence or sexual violence.  How I wish I could take their hand and the hands of their children and take them away from that which is ruining their lives day in an day out.  When children witness this kind of violence oftentimes they too become abusers.  Such a sad commentary on the world I live in.  The empathetic person in me want to heal, to heal the world, to hold those who are hurting and make the pain go away.  I cannot do that, I am not powerful enough, My God is and I pray every day that our world will become a safe place to live rather than the volent place I see in the newspapers, the TV, magazines and the radio.  I have to wonder if all survivors feel this way.  Having been witness in their own lives to violence do all surviors feel unsafe? After watching this show I am realizing that I need not watch shows like this.   It is just too triggering and the helplessness I feel does not help much. No longer is my healing of primary concern as I see it.  Yes, I will travel this path probably till the day I die, and will continue to heal and to find peace, but in that space of time, if I can in my immediate world make a difference by the very words I say and write, I want to  make a difference in the lives of those still suffering.  I know too well what suffering feels like on a very deep level. So I write this journal with love for those here at DS.  I pray for their continued healing, the awareness that is so important to heal.  I pray for those I have met here on DS and hold them in a special place in my heart. I end this journal with tears in my eyes for those who are starting their journey that they too find the peace they have longed to experience.

You are not alone! But maybe that anger that we feel galvanizes us to take what action we can, help and teach those within our own sphere of influence, and give us the determination to move forward in our own healing process. We CAN make a difference! Every life we come into contact with and every person that we can influence will go on to touch other lives, and the butterfly effect goes into motion, changing the world one small wingbeat at a time, gently and beautifully. YOU are making a difference in this world, my sister. So am I. One by one, as we take our stand and speak out against abuse, our family becomes stronger and more come to walk along this road of recovery with us, no longer being lost and victimized, tossed by tides they have no control over. And we are shedding light and hope into the world, each of us doing what we can to expose what is done in secret, each of us becoming stronger with each passing day. And we are the hope that others see, as we talk of how far we have come and share our knowledge and love with and of each other. Your heart and soul have no boundaries of depth, my beloved sister, and it is both an honor and a privilege that I can call you that.

Yea I don\'t understand either why there\'s so many men out there doing these things. I mean look at all the children molested, that means that many men are out there doing this. Like what? 1 in 3 or something? It seems like it. It\'s sad. All we can do is put more love in the world by being more loving, and hope that maybe we\'ll make a little difference. Hugs

So true Mtmamma and Rainyangel, all we can do is make a difference to those who are still suffering. I think the stats say 1 out of 4 are being abused regarding woman and 1 out of 7 are still being abused regarding men. I would think it is 1 out of three or 1 out of 6 or five with men. These stats are reported cases I would think, so what about those who are not revealed their sexual abuse. It is scary what is going on out there but in our small area of the world we can make a difference by speaking out about it, but not allowing our abusers to get off the hook that easily and reporting them. Hard thing to do, and also by confronting them as you have Rainyangel. You know in your heart what he did, so he has to live with his lies. You know the truth and once again, I am proud of your courage.

We are all entitled to the anger; it is how we let it define us that makes the differnece. We would not be who we are without that anger - the learning, the growing, the teaching, the reaching out and supporting others - if we were not pissed, we would not be in this spot. Yes, I am still pissed; but I won\'t let it define who I am. I can go past the anger and learn how to redefine who I am. Just for the simple fact we even identify the anger and WHY we are angry is huge. I just got off the phone to my mom for her mother\'s day call - she pushed those buttons in less than 2 minutes degrading me for putting myself into the planning of and being part of the planning of my son\'s wedding. His finance lost her mother at 18. Her step mom tries, but is very sure that she get her digs in; my whole agenda is to make their day, their day. Nothing else, nothing more; and if my mom\'s selfishness pissess me off, I now why. I do not need her permission to be a better person than she. And we are all better people than those who hurt us. All of us! Happy mothers day! We should say that to ourself, because we are the only ones who can really mother ourselves. Good job in identifying the triggers.

I think we have to really protect ourselves sometimes by deing discerning about what we expose our minds to that is not neccessary, such as TV that triggers us. I have learned what I can and can not watch as well as when to watch some things. At times some things will not trigger me and other times it will. I think we have to really stay aware of where we are at emotionally and what the cost is to us in choices of what imput to allow in our lives, and think about the neccessity of it. For example, if I read about something on DS that is a trigger for me, but I can help someone else to grow in recovery, then it may be worthwhile for me to go through what I do to be of assistance to someone. If I just watch something on TV, and it serves no purpose other than to outrage and re-injure me, then it may be best to choose a different past time.
