Update on my kitty

We picked Sparrow up this morning from the emergency vets. He's doing much better (almost back to his usual self), but still needs monitoring and treatment. So, we took him out to our usual vet and they're doing the remainder of the treatment. The emergency vet gave us pills that Sparrow will have to take, so we gave them to our normal vet so they can administer them until he can come home.
They had a bit of a tough time getting the catheter in, but they got it in by about 11pm last night. He's not a happy camper (but can you blame him? he's got a catheter, IV and a cone on his head), but he's MUCH happier than he was last night.

I\'m glad he\'s feeling better! The same thing happened to my cat Henry 7 years ago. He was hiding in my closet and crying one night. In the morning I went looking for him and just had a terrible feeling something was wrong. I found him laying on the floor in the kitchen in a pool of watery blood. I took him to the ER vet and he had bladder crystals also. His urethra was completely blocked. They had to cut him open (large incision) and scrape his bladder out. He\'s been on special food ever since. Ask your vet about care credit. It\'s a line of credit to cover the care and if you pay it off within 12 months there is no interest. Henry\'s surgery was $1,100 i think. The food he is on now is prescription and it\'s Purina UR OX. $50 for a 16lb bag. Good luck with Sparrow!!

Thanks ktk! Sparrow lucked out and didn\'t need surgery. He will have to have a diet change when he gets home though. So far we\'ve paid $1500 for everything thus far. Vet bills here in Ontario seem to be extremely high. Hopefully the rest of our bills won\'t be that expensive.

Glad he is doing better! Poor guy. I would not be happy either with a catheter, iv and cone!

Hey, I was just browsing through the site, looking for inspiration on a bad day, and came across your most recent journal post, then saw this one. We currently have 2 dogs and 4 cats, so the post caught my attention. I have 2 recommendations. First, get pet insurance! I always thought it sounded silly, but then one year we spent over $5000 on our animals. I decided that was out of control, so I looked into it. We currently pay just under $100 a month to cover all 6 of our animals. But it has saved us over $3000 just this year. Highly, highly recommend. We go through VPI but there are a lot of great ones out there.
Second, we switched all of our animals to a brand called Taste of the Wild and have seen vast improvements in all of them in every way. They have all responded very well to it, even my older kitty with a sensitive system. My husband did a lot of research into pet foods and what kinds of things they should and shouldn\'t have in them. It\'s kind of hard to find, only 2 stores in our city stock it, but it\'s been worth it for the improvements in their health.
Anyway, I hope your baby is doing better.
