Former warehouses on the waterfront are now home to workshops and souvenir stores – offering a great introduction to the vibrant retail scene in this southern Hokkaido city. Japan is home to many and varied art styles, from ceramics to digital art, but perhaps the most famous pieces of Japanese art are the woodblock prints. Japan’s most famous painting, for example, is The Great Wave Off Kanagawa by Hokusai, a woodblock that has been reprinted on everything from phone cases to entire walls.

You can find these ceramics everywhere throughout the country, from local markets, shops to street vendors. If you arrived on the backroads route #2 coming in from the east, shortly after Longpan Park, you’ll hit the Eluanbi Lighthouse at the Southern tip of Taiwan. After that, you’ll pass a great beach at Sail Rock before reaching Kenting village. For some, Taitung City may be the end of their east coast journey. But if you want to extend your trip all the way to the beaches of Kenting National Park at the southern tip of Taiwan, there are two ways to go about it.
Taitung is a spread out city with limited attractions, so I only really recommend spending a night here if you’re planning to catch a tour or ferry from there. You can find craft shops, a few cafés/bars, and the occasional concert at Dulan Sugar Factory (新東糖廠文化園區). You’ll have to walk around 20 minutes or ride a bicycle/scooter to get there.
So, don’t miss out on this chance to immerse yourself in the rich culture of Taitung and learn about the local harvest traditions. You can also enjoy various performances and activities, such as music concerts, balloon parades, and night glow shows. Visitors can also participate in hands-on activities at the Taitung Harvest Festival, such as rice planting, fruit picking, and cooking classes, to learn more about the local harvest traditions.
Although it’s clearly visible from the highway, it’s surprisingly difficult to get down to it. Grab a coffee from Jinzun Café (金樽咖啡), whose café offers an unbeatable view. Before entering town, you’ll pass Water Running Upward (水往上流遊憩區), a stream that appears to flow uphill.
You should try the SunnyHills pineapple cakes, dried fruits at Nanmen Market, and sun cakes/biscuits at The Chia Te Bakery. The most popular is the premium tasting Oolong tea, which you can buy at Lin Mao Sen Tea Co. The best part of that movie is probably the floating lanterns scene, where you can see thousands of floating lights that will take your breath away.
