Reasons Why You Need To Unfollow Someone on Twitter

People of all walks of life are on Twitter. Each with his/her own agenda. Some usage Twitter for business functions, some to communicate with their friends and loved ones, and a few to learn from business insiders on topics that they find interesting.

Once you've got a few tweets below your belt and adhere to a few hundred individuals and are followed with a couple hundred, the power of Twitter begins to set in.

One of the first things you will notice is that your Twitter timeline comprising the tweets of who you are following will move faster and quicker as you add more people to a list. The problem with this is that it makes the tweets of your followers harder and more difficult to see as their tweets come from every which way into your timeline. When you have thousands of followers, your timeline will probably be moving at the speed of light!

To combat this problem, you're left with only one option and that is to unfollow some of your Twitter followers. It's sad but true.

Though this is the major reason to unfollow somebody, I also thought it would be beneficial to compile a record of a few of the other reasons why you might want to unfollow someone besides attempting to clean up your Twitter deadline to ensure it is readable.

As you become more familiar with Twitter, you'll know why I've included these motives.

In no particular order...

1. Sending you hundreds of direct messages (DMs). Often these DMs are asks requesting you to "like" a website (more than likely theirs) on the Internet, etc..


2. Tweeting a ton of links every day. People tend to include links when they tweet. When done in moderation it isn't a huge deal but if they tweet over 10 or 20 times a day with hyperlinks, it can begin to find a little aggravating.


3. Cross submitting tweets from other societal media-related sites. It is safe to say that many on Twitter are using third party software to tweet their articles that they put on other websites for the sake of convenience. Even though it's convenient for the individual tweeting, individuals that are following his/her consideration is going to be inundated with post after post in the exact same source resulting in a common theme - aggravation.


4. Auto-posting RSS feeds of sites. Some set up their Twitter accounts in this manner that they pull the RSS feeds from websites that they prefer as a way to mechanically tweet the content in the feeds. What this leads to is a mass flooding of tweets from the timelines of people who follow you. So if you subscribed to the NY Times RSS feed as an example, it might result in having at least 50 tweets be sent out from the Twitter accounts each and every day.


5. Retweeting promotions all in uppercase. When some people come across a fantastic deal on Twitter, they prefer to spread the word about it to everybody in their list. At times its not depended upon but when the article is in all UPPERCASE letters seeking to draw attention to the advertising and sent multiple times, this normally makes people unfollow others.

Tweeting past tweets over and above. As people do not have a tendency to be monitoring their Twitter accounts 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, some users prefer to tweet exactly the exact same articles at least once a day or several times each week. Although good in theory, people who view the exact same content repeated over and over will more likely than elect to remove the excess posting Twitter user from their record of followers.
