Under Their Eye: The Rise of Handmaid’s Tale-Inspired Protesters

The protests are not solely confined to Washington, D.C., or even just politics. During the Golden Globes ceremony in Los Angeles this year, a group of “Hollywood Handmaids”—which included writers, directors, actors, extras, and more—stood in a line outside the Beverly Hilton to support the nascent anti-harassment organization Time’s Up.

“We have been silenced, marginalized, belittled, assaulted, excluded, and harassed, once, twice, too many times,” the group wrote in a Facebook post. “We are the ones who have learned that this is not one-off behavior—these are decades-old patterns upheld by systems.”

Together, as they stood outside, the Hollywood Handmaids held up a sign emblazoned with three words: “Silent No Longer.”
