unappreciated!
Hello.
Where do I start?
Ahem...
a li'l background. They had been forecasting rain and wind for three days this weekend, and this time they were right. the rain wasn't so bad, although we got a few inches of rain, which seems to be the norm these days. Whatever happened to thems days when rain came a centimeter at a time? Now it's flood or flood.
So anyway some places around here got over 4 inches of rain ( 10cm) but the killer for me this weekend was the wind. We lost our basketball backboard and a downspout, as well as a section of that shit-ass fencing I put up, and keep putting back up. Over and over. I can't even find the recycle bin that my son put out to the curb this morning. I would have gone looking for it when I left for my (your word here) job, but by this time I had had it. So I let it go. All I know is that I ran over something with the car when I left the house (it was dark still).
All right.
I was a bastard yesterday. I was sick of damage control. Nobody cares to help me, nor do they dare go out in the rain to help.
I get to walk the dog in the yard, some places deep in mud.
I get to towel her smelly coat off.
I get to look at the wind-driven water sneaking in the bottom of back door.
I get to make an effort to drain the water gathering near the side of the house.
I get to look at the downspout laughing at me while I look up and water peppers my eyes.
I get to listen to water dripping in the fireplace.
I do what I can. Sometimes it's futile and I am wasting my time. There are somethings other people wouldn't bother to do, but i do it, maybe it's a compulsion.
Saturday we bought a backup hard drive to store the tons of music and videos my kids download and to store pics my kids take. Gigs and gigs of memory that add virtually nothing to one's life.
And I get the "When are you gonna migrate all the data?" and "How's that coming along, Dad? " and "how's that backboard coming along?" and it's enough to drive me crazy.
...If you haven't noticed.
I know that there are times when everyone will feel unappreciated to some degree. can I make this a special case this time? Egad, I just wanted to explode into a rage. I know it's not the kids' fault.
I know DW knows I am all worked up into a froth. So her idea is to ignore me, to isolate, stay the hell away to avoid getting hurt. Thanks a lot. I need you. You are making things worse.
Sunday we went to MIL's place to celebrate her 72nd. I felt like chewing someone's head off. Nobody suspected anything. Maybe they are in their dream world where Dad umbrellas them. Or maybe my stoic performance shows no clue. I was desperate to pick myself up for this event. The whole extended fam doesn't need to enjoy the product of my frustration.
But I got through it. Why my BIL annoys me while he talks is still a mystery. Maybe b/c he is an idiot. He talks to hear himself. I still think he is gay, but don't tell his wife. I am smart enough to know that he is just a person like everyone else, and that he is loving and kind. But I pick him out of the crowd.
So we come home from that. I take the dog out again, and then I get to my Sunday night rituals of starting my work week by ironing some shirts and pantal00ns for work.
And then it washes over me again.
the when-are-yous. I am busting my ass (okay, I give in, I am ironing, not building a nuclear reactor). What torqued me this time is I am still going. Everyone else is sitting on their ass. Now I know how DW feels when she is doing housework and she gets annoyed when nobody else pitches in (which is why I pitch in).
I though about talking to DW about my mood, but I am pretty sure I can't do it without losing my cool. And to say that I feel unappreciated will come back to taunt me with her not making me feel better, but the old how-do-you-think-i-feel. Well who tells you that you are the most attractive woman in a room, or that this meal as awesome?
I need a turn. But I won't get it by complaining.
Had enough yet?
I have. It's gonna be a long day. And I can't wait to call home and hear about how I left the recycle bin and its contents strewn about the neighborhood. Yeah, it's gonna be a good one.
