Tutoring that works

As a teacher and a parent I've had quite a bit of experience with children. I've seen both my students and my own children struggle with grasping new material. It never ceases to amaze me, however, when you suddenly witness the light bulbs in their brains magically click on and everything starts to make sense. Sometimes it only takes a few minutes of one-on-one time for this to happen; sometimes it takes a few weeks. Either way, it is impossible not to smile when it happens. That is what teaching, tutoring, and parenting is all about, and that is the main reason I have started to tutor through WyzAnt.

So often I see my students' parents enroll them in tutoring at one of the many tutoring "centers" that can be found in strip malls around the state, and just as often, I see little to no effect on the students' performance. I'm not sure what the tutoring process is at these places, but I can only assume that there is some sort of prescribed method that every tutor must adhere to. The problem is, not every student learns the same way. The cookie cutter mentality doesn't work in school, it doesn't work at home with one's own children, and it certainly doesn't work when it comes to tutoring.

This is why my goal is to provide tutoring that works. I know it might sound as if I am stating the obvious, but working toward that magic moment when I get to see somebody's light bulb magically click on is my motivation, and providing an individualized tutoring program to every person I get to tutor is what will help this happen.
