Trying to remember part II
My parents cocktails of choice: Dirty gin martini, made 3 to 1 for mom. Dad usually had Manhattans, or whiskey on the rocks. This was an every day, after work ritual, The Cocktail Hour, or as I call it now "the bewitching hour". I have never seen either one of them weaving around drunk, or fall-down drunk. This was the role model for responsible cocktailing. One stiff one after work, because the day was hard and long, and dinner was not yet on the table. That was it.
On weekends they would maybe indulge in 2 cocktails, with cheese and crackers on the side. Holidays and vacations were a little more saturated, the volume on conversations higher, the laughter raucous. They were letting loose. That's how you do that.
Were their arguments fueled by gin and whisky too? I imagine, toward the end of their 20 something year marriage, that cocktail hour was more for shoring up their negative emotions toward one another, rather than a way to relax from the day.
I try to remember, but it's elusive, I didn't pay close attention to what or how much they drank, because that would never have been an issue, that was normal. Their deal was that they married too young, shotgun, did what was expected of them for as long as they could, until they realized they were two very separate, very un-like people.
