trying to keep hopeful

I really try to stay positive, but it's hard. I've been biking for two months and not overeating, but I haven't lost as much weight as I feel I should have. I found out my thyroid is acting up again after going to the doctor. It just doesn't seem fair.
I am also frustrated socially. I am really tired of people acting cold on purpose and I know I shouldn't take it personally, it's a pet peeve. It was so awkward at my son's preschool Halloween party. All the parents seemed to carefully avoid any real interaction with each other. I just don't understand the choice to be cold.
Sometimes I feel like one of the Munsters. I am friendly, but guests seem to run screaming from my weirdness. Except it's nothing anybody can put a finger on, it's just some vague, generalized weirdness. I do tend to jump around from topic to topic, but that's how my mother was and it seems too late to radically change now.
I want to be empathetic and I want to care about others, but I'm afraid. How can I empathize with people who genuinely believe they are better than me? How can I empathize with people who feel they have it all together and don't need me bothering them? it's just hard not to see a lot of the city as a bunch of people who don't care.
I still have my college friends and my brother, I just wish I could find more local people to hang out with. I love my husband so much and I feel better after spending time with him and the kids, but I want a full, happy life in every way.
