Triggered
I went Arfinator on the handyman this morning. Woofin' loud enough to shake the windows on a high rise office building. The good news(?) being that I didn't need to shake every penthouse window on main street. Just enough that I cleared the job site enough to get back to work myself. Sorta. The distraction and his wordy preferences are gone, but my focus is not doing well. I am bouncing from task to task without getting too far on any of those tasks.
I believe I am double triggered.
1) HM's (handyman's) performance so far has reminded me an awful lot of the times I have paid my Eldest Son for work. The man is 60. I am getting visions of my 85 year old self, still arguing with a 60 year old child. Resuming my "Let Go and Let God" meditations for that one. Really don't even want to go there.
2) Dumb Broad triggered. Specifically, I find myself with flashbacks to the psychotic break which brought an end to may construction career in 1995. On the commercial construction sites, all of my mentors and quite a few of my bosses were consistently impressed with my handling of the "Marky Machos." Those would be the problem children one can find on most any construction site. Usually they are young men with far more hormones than experience and expertise for all on every subject, especially the subjects where they have no experience. Sometimes they are old men who never grew up, but not too many. By 40, their reputation typically preceeds them. Marky Machos are not only difficult to work with, they are all too often safety hazards for the entire job site. They are too busy experting and/or playing grab-ass to notice safety issues like where they leave tools or place their ladders. My handling of HM is rather typical of how I handled the Marky Machos. Brief, to the point, with zero room for argument. The Bitch is arfin'. Clear the set or prepare to get bit.
I have had allot more help with my domestic issues than my career issues. No, MS. Steinem, I don't believe a law mandating my job title as "Lead Person" or any amount of grammar correction is going to solve the complex issues that come up when an entire commercial job site falls silent to watch little ol' me walk across the job site with a tool box/belt. I will be anxious to see what kind of progress your expertise can make when you take off your lawyer costume and put on a tool belt. Not too many people on my therapy support network, male or female, have allot of experience with being a construction boss. I still haven't met another female construction boss.
At this point in time, I believe my Dumb Broad triggers are far more significant than my domestic triggers. For now, my main domestic triggers have geographical insulation. None of them are here. They are still in my heart, but they are not here and in God I trust.
Seems logical to me that the current effort to build an aeroponics lab is going to trigger the Dumb Broad Show more than once before the work is done. I sorely crave peace on that set.
I am tempted to call it a triple trigger. HM is a chatty fellow who is extremely hard for me to hear and he can't seem to catch on to that simple fact. Not too much of what he says seems worth repeating. His inability to remember my hearing handicap is yet another distraction which serves as a constant reminder of that handicap. Please save your clever chit chat for folks with hearing as good as yours. I really don't want to come down off a ladder to hear about your gf's latest spa enhancements. That clever chit chat sounds like a droning fly in between the few words I can catch. Buzz, buzz, buzz, sexy mama, buzz, buzz, buzz. . . Can we get back to work now?

Arfie, I deleted a novella about my experiences in construction, b/c I dont' want you to think I'm comparing to yours or belittling yours. We're different generations, and while I was raised in the business to the point I can project manager without even thinking how I know what I know, the vibe was different. Or, perhaps, I just didn't bother noticing it. You fuck up on my site, you get off my site. You fuck up by thinking my gender means I should sweep up, you get a broom handed to you. You want coffee, go buy it. You want to dick around (word choice deliberate) for 90 minutes b/c you just realized Leo's the job boss for the general contractor and *not* "a grunt"? Well, okay, that's nice. You're not paid for that last 2 hours of your work, and have a nice life. (That guy still crosses the street to avoid me, 10 years later. I really don't mind.) He also never worked for that general contractor again. (Good guy, wish he hadn't gotten hurt, spine injury put him outta work an dme out of a job I really liked, alas.) My mom was a nurse. When she managed units, screwups meant death. I go into it that way. I don't care if you sing Nickelback or Elvis, just do the job correctly the first time, and we're cool.
I remember walking onto a site with my skirt suit on, hair styled nicely, make-up on, and the workers were shocked. Yeah, so? I'm sure they look nicer if they're not wearing chambray, denim, and work gloves, dust masks, and goggles, too. Nice of you to notice, now get the eff back to work, I'm on my way to a meeting, just dropped by to make sure the subfloor repair is done today so we can start laying tile tomorrow.
Best trick? Turn on a radio and hum.
....
All that to say... for peolpe who pick up work for odds-ends income, word-of-mouth basis, etc., that's often their *social* life. For me, social life was lunch break, y'know? Then back to work. It's the thing I miss absolutely not at all!
As fo rme, "sexy mama" and so forth didn't apply to me ever at all on any site. Around any men. Even obligatory "woo-hoo woot-woot" didn't appear. On that score, I have no clue. I am glad I don't, frankly.
Anyway, point being...... I had no point, just your post reminded me of my own times, and I wanted to give you a shout-out of support. Sort gently:-)
I was raised with the stereotypical boy/girl divisions in the family business, complete with skirts for the girls and pants for the boys. Theoretical support was there for a girl to be whatever she wants to be, but not too much of that support was practical. No shortage of clever repartee's to throw at offenders, but allot of justing around for the messy emotional impacts that remain just-proof. Like, how do I get past the flashbacks of being beat up with tools for the crime of knowing a crescent wrench from a box wrench. For my own good, of course. So far, the justing hasn't worked on this flashback set, either, no matter how much I want to *just get over it.*
I *just* want to be able to pick up a tool without slipping into psychosis and staring at a single screw for three days before I can find the courage to open the tool box.
I bought a garden cart this morning. The same model I have been in love with for long enough to have bought and assembled 3 already. I'm not sure I should be trying to assemble it in my current condition, but I am giving it a try in between plying therapy tools when I lose my focus.
Prayers (by whatever name) and support appreciated.
Off I go to ply the next set of bolts. To try, at least.
One year I took my car to Goodyear for an alignment. They never tightened the control arm bolts. I wasn't amused, and communicated that to them on the phone.
When we took it back, the manager took me into the service bay to talk to me. From the looks of the other staff, that wasn't done very often.
The work then got done right, and in under an hour.
This was after a disaster that we'd had at Sears Auto. My ex had taken care of that one though, and I thought that he was far too accommodating. (I get mistakes, but when SAFETY is the issue...there's no reply other than "we were wrong, how can we make it right".) My ex couldn't negotiate for shit either. (Years of yard saling/ flea marketing pay off.)
Got the garden cart assembled. Still don't have the strictly personals of the brain freeze sorted, and the assembly took a ridiculous amount of time, but. . . progress over perfection. I am counting ^it^ as a victory.
Does getting my laundry done count as a celebration? I'm almost to the point of wearing my cleanest dirty clothes. Nah. Maybe tomorrow. I still have at least one clean set for after my shower. I am okay with laundromats, but they still make procrastination more attractive.
I've washed clothes by hand before...(it's actually not nearly as bad as it sounds...if you're got a system.) In the "old" days what would have been hard is heating up all that water by hand. Hot water heaters are wonderful inventions.
I actually really, really love a clothes line, but it's not practical where I live now.
