The Perrets reused the vaults for the church at Le Raincy in 1923, and explicitly emphasized the connection between the industrial scheme in Morocco and the monumental scheme in France. Throughout his career, he remained partial to this inexpensive, robust material. The coherence of his work, which spans more than half a century, reflects his desire to enshrine modern construction within a new architectural order defined as the School of Structural Classicism. At the end of the 15th century, the Sanguin family moved to Livry. Simon Sanguin, a bourgeois from Paris, a cloth merchant, bought a piece of land there in 1489. His son Simon bought the seigneuries of Livry and Coubron in 1499. The heirs then succeeded each other from father to son as lords of Livry. It's 50 cents for a corn on the cob, 1.50 euros for a 50 cl drink.
Founded by the French Architecture Institute, the Contemporary Architecture Archives Centre has been playing a central role in this enterprise. In the post-war period the lead was taken by Polish refugees, for whom a School of Architecture was established in Liverpool in 1944. Williams promised a building for £9,500 ‘all in’, and whose future maintenance costs would be ‘negligible’. The zigzag side walls gave extra support to the cantilevered ladies’ galleries, while concrete made it easy to form windows in the shape of the Star of David and the menorah or seven-branched candelabra. The external cladding was also of concrete pre-cast slabs that were a tessellation of geometric shapes filled with brilliantly-coloured glass by Maurice Denis. This reflects Raincy’s importance in the emergence of L’Art Sacré, a movement that united artists, architects and craftsmen to bring art that was aesthetically challenging as well as devotional into churches.
Of Gothic inspiration, this concrete edifice reaches up to the bell-tower that dominates the 45 meters-high facade. Columns of concrete of decreasing size and framing the stained glass windows fit perfectly into each other in the manner of a telescopic antenna.
