There seem to be religious overtones in his writing, and I am sometimes reminded of the Shintoist prophecies which hold that Japan is a "miniature" of the entire world. We can be sure that he is no crackpot, and it would obviously be inappropriate to react to his ideas emotionally, however unpleasant are their implications for our entire civilization. I would not be surprised to find many Americans agreeing with some of the elements in his analysis if they were presented somewhat less gloatingly. I must admit that I am impressed by Dr. Umano's obvious originality and erudition and, certainly, thankful for his frankness. Except for some out-and-out chauvinists like Sadahiko Tamura, who can hardly be taken seriously, few Japanese have expressed their misgivings about America so frankly or enunciated their sense of Japan's superiority so openly. Reading between the lines of Japanese newspapers, I do frequently notice the same attitude — a sort of smugness about foreigners and their uncouthness.
