Tough Day For Me.

Today, 7 years ago at approx. 12:30pm, I received a hysterical phone call from my oldest daughter, informing me that my son Michael, (her younger brother) had been killed in a car wreck.  I was at work on my lunch hour.  I put the phone down, announced to those in the lunch room, what had happened then, I went to my office, sat down at my desk and wept like a little child.
This was the most horrible thing, I have endured to date.  He was 37 yrs. old, was divorced and, left 3 children behind.  A daughter 15, a son 10 and a daughter 4.
My son was riding in a vehicle, driven by a drunk driver.  He hit and embankment, rolled the SUV and, my son was ejected. He did not have his seat belt on.  The driver got out of the vehicle, checked my son then, walked away from the crash site and went home.  He went to bed and slept for 9 hrs. He then called the authorities and reported his vehicle stolen, during the night, by my son.  He then made numerous phone calls to other people, asking if they had seen my son driving his "stolen" vehicle.
As a farmer was going to his field, he saw the vehicle, laying on it's top, in a tree line next to a ditch.  He called the Authorities and they dispactched a State Trooper to the scene.  As he was checking the vehicle, he walked around it and spotted my son's body, laying in the ditch.  It had been 104 degrees.  He immediately called in to his office and CSI were called in due to it now becoming a crime scene.  They impounded my son's body, we couldn't make funeral arrangements till the investigation was complete and the autopsy performed.
When the Police went to the driver's home and told him they had fouind his "stolen vehicle and my son, his first question to them was "where"?  The driver was dressed in shorts when they entered his home.  They saw he had a fresh head injury, had skinned places on his knees and they could see the welted imprint of the seat belt across his chest.  When they asked him how he received the head injury and skinned knees, he told them he had injured himself, while searching for firewood without a flashlight, while camping the previous week.  They then took his story apart.  They told him they had the bloody air bags from the suv, that had deployed when the vehicle hit the embankment.  They told him they had blood samples from the side of the driver's door and also, they said they had my son's shirt that had blood on it as well.  They said if he wanted to stick with his version of his story, that was fine but, they said they were prepared to get a court ordered DNA swab from him and they were sure it would match the blood on the air bags, the car and my son's shirt and that DNA test would place him behind the wheel at the time of the accident.  He then asked if he could call his lawyer.  This man was supposed to be by son's "best friend".  Friends don't do friends, this way.  When they asked him for his clothes he had on, at the time of the crash, he said he didn't remember where they were.  When they said they could site him for withholding evidence in a criminal case, involving a loss of life, he had his wife go get them.  He had them hidden in a trash bag, in a trash can, in his neighbpr's garage.
I spent the next 2 days, talking to State Police and the county coroner to finally get my son released to the funeral home.  For the next 2 years, I spent a lot of time talking to lawyers, state's attorney's, State Police, insurance companies. etc.
This is a tragedy, that I will never, ever, forget.  No-one and I repeat, no-one can know what this does to a person until they have had to experience it!!!!  I wish that on no man!!!!!

Thanks Gaye and you also, Bandmom. The Lord is who got me through this. I felt His presence with me. The nights I prayed for my family as well as myself, I felt His presence so close, I felt I could reach out and touch Him.
God\'s grace is sufficient and Christ is my all sufficient Savior and friend.

Hugs* What a horrible painful memory to endure. Breaks my heart. I have never lost a child. I don\'t know what that part is like, but I got that same phone call and was told my uncle ( who was like a father to me) was killed when I was 11 years old along with his daughter in a car accident. I know what that phone call is like, and i can tell you I have never suffered anything more painful. I can\'t imagine how you must feel with it being your own baby. Hugs* I just wanted to let you know you are not alone and that I\'m not patting you on the back, but I empathise and share a particle of your pain. You are not alone. I\'m sorry I didn\'t see this entry sooner. I knew the date was coming because you had told me. I am so very sorry for your loss. My heart breaks and goes out to you my dear friend.
