Total Thyroidectomy for Multi Nodular Goiter

I had a total thyroidectomy December of 2006. Two reasons being, the possibility of cancer & osteoporosis at the age of 49! I went through menopause with no hormone replacement therapy. When I found out about the osteoporosis, I knew enough to know that it was caused from estrogen depletion & an overactive thyroid gland. I had a nonexistent TSH for at least 18 years before my thyroidectomy. I had one very concerned female doctor that ran many thyroid labs during 2002/2003 which I am so grateful for - at least I know what my body used to produce naturally. It was a high T3 that made me hyperthyroid. My last readings in June of 2003 were TSH .01 (range .40-6.00) Free T4 1.4(.8-1.8) & Free T3 4.1 (2.3-4.2). I was not able to go back to this doctor because my husband switched jobs & insurance. I had gone to an endocrinologist in 1983 & he told me the only reason to take my thyroid out was cosmetic. I developed a goiter with my 1st pregnancy & it seemed to grow with the next 2 pregnancies & then went down a few years after the last pregnancy in 1988. So, I ignored the nonexistent TSH until I went through menopause & ended up with osteoporosis. I did have a couple needle aspirations before surgery that showed the possibility of cancer. I had an excellent cancer surgeon that was able to preserve my parathyroid glands. Unfortunately, it took me 3 1/2 years to figure out I had one of the worst endocrinologists that ran only TSH labs even though I started complaining within 7 months of my surgery of dizziness & a feeling that my brain was frying and/or on too much of something.
