Concentrated acid, persistent length, and a lean profile. White peach, mandarin orange and apricot are delivered with a core of minerality that makes this dry Riesling shimmer with energy and freshness.
The winery is managed by Michael & Hollie Aylward whose passion originated over a decade ago with a part-time job at the family’s previous winery Kooyong. Ocean Eight has evolved into the couple’s full-time obsession. These trips played an important factor in the style of wines now produced at Ocean Eight. This passion-driven endeavour to bring the highest quality wine to the Mornington Peninsula saw Michael win the sought-after Australian “Young Gun of Wine” award in 2011. The 2019 season here at Delamere will go down on record as so close to perfection it will be hard to beat. Overall it was Tasmania’s second warmest season on record (an advantage straight out of the blocks in a cold, marginal-climate wine region like Pipers River!).
The textural mid-palate displays delicate nectarine and biscuit flavours that flow into a crisp, almost spicy pear and apple skin finish. The word ‘Pazza’ in Italian is the feminine version of CRAZY. Fittingly, this is my wild fermented, preservative-free, unfined, unfiltered, Riesling sourced from the dry grown Watervale Peglidis vineyard.
A shy and somewhat restrained nose exuding white flowers, peach, nectarine characters, and subtle hints of nougat and wood spice. On the palate, a bedrock of chalky minerality supports a core of intense stone fruit, framing its lingering acidity. 2017 Freycinet Chardonnay, A$40, benefits from an extra year on its companion below, developing savoury, toasty characters alongside its funky overtones.
