To Maine and Back
Left on Thursday for Maine - Arrived to find that the telephone, internet, and cable had already been shut off and the house was pretty well trashed. All of the items, with the exception of the glass screen that my daughter had given me for mother's day, had been taken from my display case by my brother and donated.
He had spent the 3 weeks just dropping empty packages and shopping bags on the floor, and letting the cats mess all over the house. He'd cleaned nothing but the dishes he was eating from and left the back door open and knocked the screen out of the sliding glass door in the front, leaving that open as well, so the entire house was swarming with flies.
The living room was filled with crates of his belongings and other items he wished for me to pack into the truck, blocking access to the room where the few pieces of furniture that I was planning to take were located, and he still had to get his clothing and computer from upstairs.
When I arrived, the phone, internet, and cable was already turned off, so we watched video tapes. In the morning, I had the boxes disconnected so that I could drive them to the store (45 minutes away) and return them. My brother disconnected his boxes, but neglected to gather the cables for the box, and they told me at the store that each cable was a $37 charge, but I could mail them back.
I got a message from the Uhaul people that I was going to have to drive 35 miles rather than 10 miles in order to pick up the truck, adding even more to the day, but my friends informed me that they would be arriving on Friday night rather than Saturday morning and go with me to drive the truck back, which saved me a great deal of bother, especially since my brother was complaining of dizzy spells and he was supposed to drive the truck back from the uhaul store.
So Saturday, I got up at 3:00 am and they were there. We left to pick up the truck around 7:00, and started loading it around 9:00. By 3:00 pm we were done and on the road. My brother decided that he needed to be dropped off at the ER in Portland on the way down, rather than going to a RI ER and not being treated because he has Maine Medicaid, and he could get public transportation from Portland. Even though Portland was quite a bit out of the way, I thought it was important to get him some treatment, and it was better to drop him off at the ER than a shelter.
It was a long, long day, and I got stuck in a traffic jam because of a terrible accident on 95 on the way home and didn't get home until well after 11:00 pm. My friends took the truck home with them and came over in the morning to unload, and my brother showed up at my mother's house while we were unpacking.
I am feeling selfish - I just don't understand why everyone in my family just puts their needs before mine. They don't even seem to consider what I am going through at all. My brother trashed my house and gave away my belongings while I was away. He overdosed on his medication, giving himself dizzy spells so that he would not have to help me pack up to move and would have to pay attention to him and take time out of my already jam packed, physically exhausting day to bring him well out of my way to the ER, then showed up so that he could visit my mother (supposedly), then get me to bring him to the shelter and go in with him to be sure that they would take him in, even though he knew that I was extremely busy and needed to get back to the house to get it ready because our mother informed us that she was coming home the very next day!
I just got my stuff unpacked from the truck, it is in total disarray, and my mother is coming home to the mess that I haven't had a chance to arrange the day after I had an all day, exhausting event which started at 3:00 am after almost no sleep and didn't end until well after midnight. I hurt all over, and all of these people are thinking about themselves and not one of them is considering me at all!
My daughters were unable to help me. I know that the younger one would have been here. The older one sent her husband, and he helped unload the truck. For herself, however, her friend said that she "threw some money at the problem" by giving her some gas money so that she could come up and actually help me.
R & J came up to help me - they are friends of mine through my daughter. They feel like family to me, but my blood relations did not help - those that were actually there for my struggles sat around watching the work. I participated as much as I could to shift my belonging and the girl's onto the truck and from the truck. I packed them and I will unpack them. Though it causes me pain, but as usual, I have no help.
I don't know why I expect any help = they have never been there for me before. My brother, however, expected (and received) help with his stuff, and did not participate at all in the process, other than to bring most of the stuff down the stairs.
My complaint, I suppose, is that while I am going through this huge process, I am getting no help from any of these people, and they are all adding to my burden. Both daughters are insisting that I attend to them. The girl wanted me to drop everything while we were unpacking the truck to bring her to some store to buy her a tee shirt. My brother wanted transportation. My mother is coming home, which means that I have to organize things immediately.
I can't finish with one huge project before they pile another one upon me. I can't even rest my back, and the pain is intense, and I need to find a doctor, but before I do that I have to get my medical coverage transferred to RI. To do that I have to deal with a social worker. Then I have to transfer my registration and license to RI.
It is just too huge!
