Tired of It!!
So.. I live in a house with all guys - my older brother and two of his guy friends. We all get along quite well generally, and we are very open with one another. It's been really hard on me though being the only girl in the house, especially when we get into what I would term "gendered" topics, like relationships, sex, etc. I feel ganged up on, even though I know they are not meaning to. For instance, whenever we are talking about relationships all I hear about it how fucked women are and how every girl is crazy, don't know what they want, how they mess guys' heads around all the time.. basically really negative things. When I put my two cents in and say how fucked guys are, they always have some way of making even those things women's fault. For an example, we were talking once about miscommunication in relationships. The guys were all saying how women always ask "trick" questions, where they're basically looking for an answer that isn't the obvious answer, or whatever. So they were saying how whenever a girl asks their boyfriend a question, the boyfriend always has to be on alert and answer it as if it is some kind of trick. So I mentioned how in my relationship experiences, guys are often not straightforward with their answers even though I always try to be straightforward. They turned it around to blame it on chicks saying that the only reason guys do that is because they have to do it all the time because girls are never straightforward with the questions they ask. Another time we were talking about figuring out where you stand when you're dating someone. They were bitching about the fact that they always have to ask "the question" and that's not fair because it's so nerve-wracking to do so. So I told them that actually, in most cases when I have been dating someone, I've been the one to ask "the question" and that it's really frustrating because I have never had a guy give a straight answer - they always answer with the same question back - "I don't know.. where do you think we stand?" So of course, their reply to this was that they have to answer that way because if the answer they give isn't enough of a commitment, the girl will get mad, but that if the answer is that they want a commitment, they girl will get either scared off or too attached. So I reminded them that it works exactly the same way the other way around.. but they would have none of it. It's always the girl that doesn't know what she wants. It's always the girl that confuses the guy. It's always the girl that doesn't give straight answers, and when a guy doesn't give straight answers it's still the girl's fault. I know it sounds stupid. But it really is driving me nuts. I'm tired of hearing so many negative things about my gender all the time. And whenever I bring up a personal anecdote that completely contradicts what they are saying about girls their response is that I'm not a normal chick so I wouldn't know anyways (because I grew up with all guys and all through high school and stuff hung out with almost only guys, etc etc..). So I just can't win! If I'm right it's because I'm not a normal girl. The part that really bugs the hell out of me is that when I make a matter-of-fact statement about men, they say that I don't know what I'm talking about because I'm not a guy. But when they make a matter-of-fact statement about women I'm supposed to accept it because they have more experience with women than I do. Apparently the fact that I have dated men and hung out with men all my life doesn't mean I know a damn thing about them.. but the fact that they've banged a bunch of chicks and dated a few chicks makes them fucking experts on the topic of women. I know they're not meaning to hurt my feelings. It's the fact that there are 3 guys and 1 girl... and also the fact that two of them are older (my brother is one of the older ones) which apparently makes them all-knowing in comparison to me. My brother is 6 years older than me, and even though he has virtually NO dating experiences (he's never been in a "real" relationship.. longest was like a month if that), he thinks he knows everything their is to know about women and about relationships simply by virtue of his age and how many relationships he's seen from the sidelines. Meanwhile, I haven't had a whole lot of dating experience, but I have more than he does that's for sure. I've fallen in love. I've had my heart ripped to shreds, stomped on, and tossed out the effing window. But that experience doesn't account for a damn thing because I'm only 22 and I'm not even done school yet so I don't know anything about the real world, including relationships. It's driving me nuts because I really do love my brother, and I really do like my roommates. 99.9% of the time I enjoy being around them. I enjoy talking to them. I enjoy hanging out with them. But sometimes it just gets to be way too much. Problem is, I have only lived here for a few months so I don't really have many of my own friends yet. I can't just decide I need to get away from all the testosterone and hang out with some chicks.. because I don't have any I can just call up the moment I want to call them up. It really doesn't help that I'm still in the process of dealing with my breakup in August with my first love. It doesn't help that I am still dealing with the pressures of moving to a new city (a new province even!). It doesn't help that I have been struggling with a depressed state for the past couple months with no one around who understands that I can talk to. It doesn't help that I'm in the middle of exams. It doesn't help that I still haven't found a decent job for the summer and I'm probably going to be stuck pouring coffee at Tims full time. I hate it because there is nothing that is actually really wrong. But I am under so much pressure psychologically and I am having a really hard time coping. I miss my best friend like crazy because I could talk to her about anything.... and just going to her house and sitting on the couch all night smokin joints and eating bonbons (as we liked to call them.. we used to have jon bon bonbon nights lol) always made me feel on top of the world, like everything was ok, always had been, and always will be. She's my nonsexual life partner and I wish more than anything else that I could hang out with her right now. I know I can call her, but I don't really even feel like calling her and talking about stupid shit that's bothering me.. I want to hang out with her and eat frikkin bonbons! And I can't. I don't even know what I am ranting about anymore. I'm just tired of it. I'm tired of being half alive. I'm tired of having to work to get out of bed in the morning. I'm tired of having to get myself completely baked to fall asleep at night. I'm tired of getting through the week by looking forward to partying my ass off on the weekend. I'm tired of getting through the school year by looking forward to decent paychecks in the summer. I'm tired of getting through the summers by looking forward to graduating and getting a real job. I'm tired of getting through life by looking forward to life. I'm tired of being so low.
