three weeks and one day
That's how much time we had with my Dad after they called us and told us the Cancer was back.
My Dad suffered for a long time in horrible pain. They kept telling him they couldn't find anything causing it. (six months before he went into remission from Colon Cancer)
They'd say stuff like, you may just have to live with the pain, But we finally got my Dad in as the pain got so bad even 2 ten mg lortabs weren't working on his pain.
He went in for a colonoscopy and a couple of days later my mom called me crying, she said I need your help. I can't calm your Dad down. I knew right away the cancer was back. That would be the only thing that would upset him that bad.
That was a Thursday. We thought he was going in on Monday to have surgery. We thought the toughest decision we'd have to make would be weather he had a J-sack or colostomy bag.
They ran more test. The next day the doctor came in and said "It's terminal, It's spread to the liver and the lungs"
We were devastated again. Then they would say he could live up to 2 years on chemo....5 to 6 months without.
as the days went by they could not get his pain under control. They finally put a pain pump in so he could just push button. He had to do it every 30 minutes, plus a long lasting pain med.
They then told us he was going to be able to do chemo as long as he was weak like he was and unable to control pain.
They said they didn't expect him to live six months.
We then decided on hospice. So we can enjoy some time with him before he went. The very next day after he got home he got worse. Hospice told us that with how fast he was progressing he may not make it, but a week or two, another heartbreak.
exactly a week after he got home he died. We had so little time to prepare. My mom and him would have been married 43 years this July 25.
Our Dad
he was stubborn and most of the time a know it all, but he was a great father.
when we we're kids him and mom always did things with us, going to movies, going to the beach and the lake.
I remember swimming in the lake in the deep part and just swimming with no floats or anything just to see how long we could do it. Dad would tie down a big floaty in the deep end for us to swim in to.
we'd spend the whole day.
he always liked to try new things till he accomplishes it. LA marathon, bowling, golfing, ty-kwon-do and truck driving.
He was always so annoyingly happy in the mornings.
One time I had a bunch of friends stay the night. Some on the bed an some on the floor. He came in and flipped the mattress so all the girls on the bed rolled off onto the other girls.
if I needed someone to talk to when I was upset, dad was always rational and would try to make me see there was nothing to be upset about, I'd call mom if I wanted someone to agree with me and be mad with me.
My parents taught us good values. We saw our parents as a perfect couple and parents.
The sudden news that we wouldn't have him around much longer was devastating to our family. He should have had more time, a longer life.
I can't imagine living a life without my Dad.
I love my Dad so much and am the luckiest person to have had him as a father.
I hope he knew how much We loved him
