This Past Weekend
Had a wonderful visit from my 3rd cousin & his wife on Saturday. We've been corresponding regarding our shared genealogy since not long after my aunt passed away (they emailed with her prior to her death), and they happened to be passing through the area, so I invited them over. It was nice to have someone to get excited about the same thing with!
During the visit, I got a glimpse of my "old" husband. See, my 3rd cousin's health is in severe decline. He has trouble walking, is losing his hearing & a bit of his sight. He's very quiet, because he can't hear much of what others are saying, even with a hearing aid. Sometimes I'm a little uncomfortable with all that because I'm not always sure how exactly to handle it (not that I've never had disabled friends--it just takes a little getting used to). My husband, on the other hand, has kind of a knack for relating to folks with issues like that. He was very patient & kind as he spoke to my cousin. I guess it's still in him somewhere.
On a separate note, on Sunday there was a sermon on TV my husband was watching regarding a husband's part in marriage. Not only that, but we visited a friend's church & what was the sermon about? Marriage! (It started out with a little role play of a wedding, with the bride & groom stating their vows--except that the vows were their real feelings!) The basic message was that we really need to do our own parts in our marriages, and often it starts with using the two things on the sides of our heads--our ears!
None of this was unfamiliar to me, but I found it timely. I need to remember that two wrongs don't make a right & that I must do my part.
Another point (though it wasn't a key point in the sermon--just to me) the pastor made was that God is in the business of transforming us. And I thought, "Wait a minute--I've been working on transformation! Could God be at work here??" I can't say that all my feelings in the spirtual realm have magically been worked out, but it did give me something to think about. And I think it was yet another confirmation that I really need to order Karla Downing's book. I had looked over the free study guide on line last week, and it really made me want to order the book!
