The visit that fizzled
So last night was the first visit my daughter had with my grand in over 2 weeks. We picked her up from her job at 6:15 and went to Chevy's TexMex for dinner. It was a Friday night so the restaurant was slamming busy. We went to the bar while we waited for a regular table.
First my dd asked us to stay in the bar area to eat since there was a table available right away. These are high tables with backless stools. I told her, "No, that's not safe for a 3 year old to sit up high like that for an entire meal." Then she wanted to give my gd a taste of her tequila cocktail. Again, I had to say, "No, you don't give children liquor." What an idiot.
We get a table and order our meals. The entire time, my dd kept trying to fawn over my gd and my grand was pushing her off, saying, "Stop it, mommy." I told my daughter that right now, gd is 3 1/2 and not into the cuddling like when she was younger. That made my dd very unhappy. Also, we were seated in an area with lots of young children. My daughter grumbled that she doesn't like kids and wasn't happy where they seated us. I told her, "But we have a little kid with us so this is the appropriate place to be seated." Daughter has been on meds for bronchitis, and took some kind of pill during dinner.
At the end of the meal, my dd complained that her skirt felt too snug. I suggested she change into something comfortable and come back to the house for the rest of the visit. She ended up going home and staying there. She said taking that pill after drinking tequila made her sleepy.
Gd didn't seem disappointed at all that mommy went straight home. Her expectations have gotten very low, which is sad but probably just as well. I wonder how long my daughter will stay disenfranchised from my grand's strong personality and lack of displays of affection beyond the initial greeting at the beginning of each visit. I know her narcissism isn't being fed unless gd is complimenting her, "Oh, mommy, you're so pretty!" etc. Time will tell.
