The Time Has Come
Our fundraiser is in the newspaper today... It feels much more solidified, the work we have been doing... It is as if this vapor trail of e-mails, windy weather, messaging, phone calls, handing out flyers, and a lot of hope is coming to a peak...I have been spending the last two days processing everything... Every step I have made and asked others to make... Wondering if, how, could, and why...While we were at our last publicity event, Mike was called away to a grass fire... It has already begun... The onslaught of the coming wildfire season... I have seen the damage, inhaled the smoke, and watched the embers flaring. I have looked in the eyes of both the victims and the heroes and witnessed the same glazed stare of exhaustion, disbelief, and shock...I imagined myself standing in the fields and neighborhoods of future fires, called in at all hours of the day and night, to help repair a minute amount of the damage of the totality of irrepairable damage from what could be so beautiful, but so deadly...I realized then, this is why... The eyes of one man with the graciousness to wish our team a "Happy New Year" after attempting to save a good friend's completely demolished home... A total burn down... But still that decency and compassion...One person started this whole process on a cold January morning... A day meant for celebration and new beginnings...The physical process for this event will be finished on Saturday, but the reality, the hard and painful truth, is only beginning...It shall come... It is only a matter of time...
