The Routine, Lately

There hasn’t been any major events or major changes in how things have been going with my son lately, just minor things. So I figure I’d outline how his typical day & our typical interaction is.

Now that my husband is laid off, he’s been taking the kids to school in the morning, so I can’t say exactly if my son gets out of the house & to school on time, though I can kind of gauge it by when I hear him going downstairs (when I’m in the shower) and what time my husband gets back. Basically, his morning routine seems to be the same: alarm goes off at 5am; by the time he leaves his room, he’s dressed (usually changing shirt, maybe pants, underwear or socks, but not every day). No breakfast, no brushing teeth.

At school, I know he goes to every class. For lunch he normally has pepperoni pizza & chocolate milk, though occasionally he’ll have a cheeseburger or mozzarella sticks. He says he doesn’t have a usual group of people he sits with, since everyone’s lunchtime rotates every day.

He has never had a problem being on the bus in time to go home. From how he talks, he does some socializing while at the bus pick-up area and on the bus. When he gets home, I assume he has a snack (usually Pop Tarts or crackers) then does his homework in his room.

Normally when I get home he voluntarily tells me that he is done with or close to done with his homework. Ordinarily, I don’t see his homework, although occasionally these past weeks I have seen some of it on his desk. Sometimes when he hears me coming up the stairs, he’ll greet me with a happy “Mother!” Once in a while, he’ll give me a hug.

He will eat a normal size dinner, although he doesn’t eat enough fruits/veggies (I think). Then he may hang out with us for a while or might do some chores, like put away the dishes. Though he’s not crazy about it, he hasn’t been dragging his feet on doing chores like he used to Then he may play a computer game (he has some on CD). He might take a break for that & watch TV with the family instead. On Mondays, he goes to Youth Group & every other Friday, the whole family goes to a church small group, where all the kids hang out & watch a movie together. He gets along well with all the kids there.

He’s usually pretty good about starting to get ready to go to bed on time at 9pm (although on Mondays, he’s home later). He has been brushing his teeth. He usually lets me hug him good night & says good night to his Dad. Then usually his lights are out by 10pm, though not always.
