The Reserve Residences

The reserve residences is a thoughtfully curated integrated development with transport hub that brings together 1- to 5-bedroom luxury residences and serviced apartments, as well as retail and public spaces. It is conveniently located in the Beauty World neighbourhood, and is seamlessly connected to transport networks and nature attractions.

The first reserve settlements in Canada were designed by the Crown as part of a program to "civilize" Aboriginal peoples through agriculture and Christianity and a way of life based on private property. The government also moved and reduced reserves, and took resources from them — all without compensation for those living on them.

Despite the social hardships that reserve life can bring, reserves are often places of cultural survival and preservation, where Indigenous languages continue to be spoken and taught in schools, and traditional ceremonies and foods are kept alive. However, many of the challenges facing Indigenous communities, including poor socioeconomic conditions, inadequate housing and lack of employment, continue to affect these communities.

In the 1960s, what was then Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) began a subsidy program to help with the construction of houses on reserves. The program was evaluated in 1982 and found to have a marginal impact on on-reserve housing. Today, the federal government continues to support on-reserve housing through a variety of programs and funding, and through initiatives such as the Ministerial Loan Guarantees and the Shelter Allowance component of Income Assistance. The current policy, known as the On-Reserve Housing Policy, has a limited role in supporting home ownership.
