The Reality And Non-Reality Of Mathematics
For me the last exposition is easy to simply accept and believe. Having studied mathematics from the fundamental to the sophisticated levels, I have strongly come to think that God speaks to us through mathematics and that His knowledge is strewn through the entire many realms of this field. Even though for some it's difficult to conceive of an all-knowing energy and inventor, a jump in to the myriad oceans of mathematics easily makes one realize that it is you can forget difficult to consider of such a One than to think the complexities and facts of the remarkable subject.
In the end, what's more challenging to conceive of: an endless quantity of infinities or an Almighty? When I first found that truth about the infinity of infinities throughout Set Theory school my senior year in university, I was completely mesmerized. "How could that be?" I mused. Infinity indicates just that--infinity. No end in view; a thing that continues on forever. Just how can there be several? Even millions. Billions? An infinity of them? Yet odd facts such as for instance they are what we get from mathematics. When these realities become validated, our belief in mathematics and in a greater being becomes more real. Trust is evidence or proof of those ideas we can't see. Faith validates that although we can not see anything, i.e. God, that that anything continues to be real.
We see and knowledge purposes of mathematics in real life everyday. We've automobiles and electricity and tv and the pc, the latter of which includes harnessed the understanding and energy of binary arithmetic. We could see these purposes, feel these programs and enjoy these applications. They are real. Yet the foundations which such applications are built, the axiomatic methods where all applications finally uncover from theorems provable based on these axioms, are, based on Kurt Gödel's work, predicated on a certain level of faith. The leap from proof to truth, ultimately, is always predicated on faith.
You can imagine the bad images that ran through my brain in the moments leading up to my using the mike for the initial time. The full time waiting to talk looked as an eternity.
