The past year
As I review the time and changes since J. died (Dec. 16, 2010) I am more pleased than not. I have found that I have some great strengths to carry forward and some friends that are good through thick and thin.
So far, one day at a time, I've been able to keep up with this old (1864) house physically and financially. I've had to hire a carpenter, and found a good one thanks to J's extra-terrestial help.
I've increased in faith that everything is going to be okay. Why we have to go through all this crap down here is a bit of a mystery. I guess the old "original sin" explanation will do as well as any.
I have had many instances of friendship, love and caring. There have been a couple of vulctures and the self important advice givers, but most people have been kind and at least meaning to help.
I have found a new interest (Sacred Harp) and a new group to do an activity with. I may look around for a couple more of these. DS has been a huge help as a community.
I have maintained an eating plan for my health and I am now increasing exercise.
I have kept the animals (3 dogs, 2 cats) well fed and healthy. They are my dearest little companions.
I have built a new and stronger relationship with one of the 2 stepkids. The other, ...well, the jury is still out, but I have great hopes.
I have begun a new job in an elementary school. It was offered to me by an old boss. It is mostly fun. (But boy, those little kids really carry the viruses!)
I have tried several other new activities around here. Some I may get into more deeply.
I have sought out and made use of grief groups and counseling, as well as DS.
I have restored one room of the house and gotten rid of a lot of stuff. More still to do!
I have set some firm boundaries with people who do not have my best interests at heart. Done with doormat!
I continue forward in 12 step meetings. It will be 24 years on the 27th!
I have learned that I truly am grateful that J. is well and happy. I am willing to keep
going as long as I must, trying to be useful and reasonably happy until my promotion comes.
I have learned to lean on others who have been through this and allow them to lean on me. I have learned to tolerate the insensirtive, finding what humor I can in dumb remarks. I have learned to say "no" firmly and often to the pompous, the unctuous and the dramatic.
In all I think it has been a good year. I hope to be open to more fun and joyous experiences in the New Year.
May we all find our ways to new happiness.
