The ongoing future of Project Management

Events of the last decade have changed the face of project management and as the environment by which tasks find themselves in changes; project management will have to change to keep pace. Project managers who is able to accurately forecast demands for change and alter their plans to accommodate them will have an benefits over those who may. Before we gaze into the crystal ball, why don't we look into the influences which may have set project management on their current course.

Deservingly or wrongly, the THAT world lost a great deal of credibility when everyone turned their calendars toward the year 2000. Right now there were undoubtedly systems and applications out there that did require modification to accommodate the new centuries but the amount of money invested in Y2K programs could not be validated by the changes which were made. Every IT business had some sort of Y2K program or other. Those organizations that were not adequate to manage an in-house program involved consultants.

Every line of code in every app and every data record in every database was reviewed for "compliancy". This kind of despite the fact that every commercially available system at that time noted dates with a 4 character year format. Certainly there were some applications and data tables which used a 2 number field to hold yr data.

The original reason for by using a 2 personality field to record this information was the impact out card and the price tag on memory. three or four decades prior to the year 2000 the additional efforts to punch 2 more characters onto an information card and the expense of the excess memory the 4 personality field would incur were a consideration.

Anyone in the 80's and 90's creating new date areas must not have used a 2 character field and anyone upgrading an app or database should have converted the 2 personality field to a 4 character field. Those applications and databases which would not use the 4 character field were few and far between but large, expensive, Y2K programs were spawned nonetheless.

The effect on the community was even more absurd. Millions of dollars were spent on stocking up on many methods from cashews to cash due to a perception that come January 1, 2000 no cash register or ATM would work. People were so spooked they stocked their cellars with food and water on a size not seen since the bomb shelters of the cold war.

When companies found out that were there put in all that money over a program which found and corrected a handful of problems they commenced to ask pointed questions about the ROI of the program. The result was a more cynical procedure to Information Technology, programs, and projects in standard.
