The Monster in the Cage
Addiction is a monster with a ravenous appetite. I live with this monster. In the beginning, it was just a baby monster, and only nipped at me a little. I thought it was fun to play with, and I ignored the scratches I walked away with afterward....Then it started taking bites out of my flesh, bigger and bigger bites. Finally, I realized that it would eventually consume me if I did not do something. So....with much effort, I put the monster in a cage. At first, when I walked by the cage, the monster screamed and clawed through the bars, demanding to be released, demanding another bite of me.....so I learned to stay farther from the bars and plug my ears to the monster's demands. The monster has grown quieter and quieter, weaker and weaker. What if I open the door of the cage to see if the monster has changed its ways???? If I ever open the door again, the monster will spring up and devour me with all the hunger of its long fast......

I have too much to lose...I have no idea if I will ever be rid of the \'monster\'...to be honest...I don\'t care....to \'test myself\' can never be worth the damage I could do.
The further we are from the insanity...the clearer it all becomes.

Yes, the monster has quieted down, but he is waiting, waiting for you to open his cage, he is on his \"best behaviour\" right now, then when you open the cage you are also opening pandora\'s box and he will thrive on your misery!

I too love the analogy of the monster. I have a very nasty one, but I\'ve put him in a soundproof cage and I imagine him like one of those Aliens from the movies. He looks okay behind the shatter-proof glass, but if he could find a way under or over his prison, he\'d eat my heart. Thanks for such a good journal. I will keep from taunting my monster and eventually he will grow bored and become smaller until I perish from old age.

This is so true. The monster will never be soothed. He quietly waits and when he is fed he pounces. Best to keep him on a complete diet. !!!!
