The Moment We Met... He Cracked Me Up
The anniversary is approaching. Sept. 16, 1991. It was a Wednesday. It was about 10:45 in the morning. I was a newspaper reporter/photographer, and he was chief of a newly-organized rescue squad in our town. There was a wreck, and it was my job to go out to accident scenes and snap photographs and gather information for a news article that I would write before the next edition of the paper. It was Donald's job to be a hero.
The accident involved a propane home delivery truck that had overturned in a residential neighborhood. No one was hurt but emergency workers were going to take a lot of precautions before attempting to right the truck back on its wheels so as to avoid the possibility of an explosion. It was going to take all day for the fire department to do their thing, and the rescue squad was just standing by if needed.
I arrive at the accident scene... I was young, thinner than now, short skirt, high heels, pony tail just a swinging as I walked toward the line of emergency vehicles. My heart skipped a beat when I saw him. He was cutting up with some men on his shift and his smile lit up the morning. His laugh! His smile! I just melted right then and there and thought to myself, "I need to ask him some questions!" (Just look at my profile picture, and you will see what I mean! The man could stop traffic with that smile!)
So, I walked over and introduced myself, told him I was from the newspaper and would like to ask him a few questions if he had a moment. He says, "Sure... as long as you let me ask you a question."
Now, I had never heard that one before, so I said, "Sure, go ahead."
He says, "Those legs go all the way up?" I was shocked! He busted out laughing at my reaction, and so did his friends... but it was laughing in a funny, friendly, you are one of us kind of ways.
I just fanned my face and told him I didn't remember what I was going to ask him! He laughed again and said he was sorry and didn't mean to get me all flustered. Finally, I composed myself and did my job. Over time, I found myself going by the rescue squad office several times a week just to see him... looking all hot in his uniform and ALWAYS laughing and cutting up with someone.
I fell in love with him that first day. Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012 will be 21 years since that morning that changed my life forever. It has been 2 weeks and 2 days since I gave him up to Christ. The only consolation I get is from talking about him and all the smiles and laughter he created in our lives. I don't want anyone to get tired of my talking about him... so I thought maybe I would just write what was on my mind and get it out.
