The Miracle Was My Mom

Growing up my grandmother was often very critical of my mother... It always hurt me. I loved my grandmother though and forgive her. My mother sure didn't have it easy... Her father left my grandmother around the time of my mother's birth... just prior to or shortly after I don't remember... Mama never got to meet her father and it was painful for her always... I tried to locate him for her in 1994... but he had died a few years previously... my poor mama had so much pain... I was visiting my grandmother when I was pregnant with Cara in 1976... we were talking about my mama... I don't remember exactly what we were talking about but I know I must have said something or several somethings about how much I loved my mama... suddenly Grandma said... I'll say one thing... you kids sure love your mama... Her voice sounded so wistful... I realized then that my poor grandma didn't know how to express love and that it was a source of pain for her... I told my mama about that conversation and I think it helped her... I'm hoping it will help you... maybe your mama just didn't know how to express love... Love isn't always in words or hugs... sometimes its in getting up every day to do for those you love... its in the nights of worrying that you may never know about... its even in my wanting to share this with you... I love you.

The bible says that \"the sins of the fathers will be visited upon the 5th generation,\" or some such. I consider myself a spiritual person but not necessarily so regarding organized religion, but this always meant to me that people treat their kids the way that their ancestors treated their own offspring because that is the pattern that is passed down through the generations. So, if a mother treats her daughter a certain way, chances are that her grandmother had treated the girl\'s mother that same way, and that unless the cycle is broken, the daughter will treat her own child the same way. I have issues with my mother and have developed an interest lately in looking into how she was treated by my grandmother while growing up. I have figured out that my mom treats me like she does because her mom treated her that same way. I don\'t have any kids, probably because subconsciously I was afraid of passing on the torch. But boy, you and your mom were somehow able to transcend the curse for you to be able to have been able to express your love for your mother and your daughter. That is admirable and a miracle of sorts.
