The mind/body connection.
When your mind is anxious, angry, afraid and confused, your body reacts by getting ready to either run like hell or fight to the death. That's because your brain releases chemicals that tells the body "Something awful is about to happen!!!"
When we were cave people, that was a huge advantage. Our brains only sent out those chemicals when we saw a sabre tooth tiger or something dangerous. Once the danger the brain stopped sending out the "get ready for danger" chemicals, and the cave person could relax again.
But NOW with modern life, we have so much bullshit going on making us anxious, angry, confused and afraid ALL THE TIME. So the brain is constantly sending those chemicals out that we were supposed to just get in short bursts in an emergency. So instead of helping us run from saber tooth tigers or fight for our lives, they just wear our body down and make us sick.
Here's the good news. If you calm the body down, the brain starts to figure out "OK, false alarm, no saber tooth tigers here" and stops pumping out those chemicals. It's impossible to be physically relaxed and have panicky things in your brain at the same time. Calm the body and the brain calms down with it.
Bad news is, a lot of us stumble on a way to relax the body and calm our brains that are bad for us. Drugs, alcohol, way too much sex, self harm, eating disorders, the list is long. We stumble on one thing that works and keep using it even if it harms us as much as the being panicked all the time did. Or a lot worse.
MORE good news. there are ways to calm the body down OTHER than shooting heroin into your eyeballs. One of the easiest i a breathing trick I teach people when I help them through the 12 steps. I'll put a link to a video how to do it right under this. Go watch it, then the others for MORE details on how to use the mind/body connection to help you out.
