The Latest Dirt
The new garden has progressed far enough that I turned my attention to the compost pile this morning. I have mostly ignored it for the months it took to get the garden laid out. I am stunned at the new dirt I am discovering there under the crust that had me thinking it had returned to the packed caliche that I started throwing food and yard scraps on back in August 2011. The crust was just a protective guise. Underneath the crust was a rich, fluffy soil to make this mama proud.
it is possible that my compost pile is my most effective therapy in playing the rotten hand Life dealt me. It is easy to draw correlations between the labor of mixing gross, rotting household trash into a rich nutrient for plants and the labor of turning my toxic white trash roots into a life worth living. Both processes take a very long time. Both will hide most of the process behind crusty protective surfaces until one day the crust is scraped and you discover rich fertilizer for the wonderous cycle of life.
Mud pies, mud pies, I love mud pies
Mud pies, mud pies are for me.
I likes 'em runny, I likes 'em clumpy,
I likes 'em mixed and in between.
Add sticks to make bricks
Add sand to make cement
Add some loam and it is potting soil.
