The hits just keep on rocking...

I found out this past weekend that I have diabetes 2; another life changing adjustment. It will make me take a daily itemized look at my physical health which may also help alter my mental health - have to look at the glass as half full.
I felt very weak during the wee hours of the morning last Friday & felt on the verge of passing out. The EMTs said my blood sugar levels were extremely elevated and if I hadn't acted, I may have entered into a diabetic coma. I lost weight from not eating and although I was dehydrated, nothing I drank quenched my thirst; NOTHING. All fluids passed right thru me and I just continued to feel very weak/tired; even thought I was hallucinating. First depression, anxiety, now this. I admit turning to sweets, unhealthy snacking, etc to mask some of my troubles since I don't feel I have control of my life or future right now. Alot of this happened on my return trip from DC (3hr drive) where I lightly drifted asleep behind the wheel even after making numerous bathroom stops. I felt I had a co-pilot (& I don't mean my GPS) - perhaps my guardian angel to get me safely back home...

The diagnosis will help you to make needed changes. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about five years ago along with high cholesterol. I altered my diet and within a year there was no sign of the diabetes and the cholesterol was very good also.

I eat as much as I want whenever I want - it is WHAT I eat that has changed. I eliminated dairy and meat, but I do have these when I eat out a few times a year and with the pizza I have twice each year. I have eggnog, that I LOVE every year also. But my mainstay diet is bean/peas along with my own homemade flour and water food wraps that I roll out in my pastry roller and brown just as tortillas would be on the griddle. I store these in double plastic bags to keep them from drying out and I don\'t add fat to them just some salt mixed into the flour/water mixture for flavor. I use these wraps for fruit from my fruit trees also. I drink lots of water throughout the day and do a very, very small amount of PT most days but have to skip when my CFIDS illness is severe. After I stopped eating the dairy and meat on a regular basis and instead was eating fruits, bean/pea mixture in food wraps with my favorite Cayenne pepper sauce along with all the veggies I wanted the pounds began to \'take a hike\' all on their own without any real effort on may part as I ate all I wanted as often as I wanted. All I changed was WHAT I was eating. I still enjoy all the \'goodies\' such as egg nog, pizza, etc. but it is kept to a few times a year.

Be very gentle with yourself and you will learn what works best for you over time.

I\'m sorry you found out you are now diabetic. I also have become diabetic. It is hard sometimes. You will do okay with the monitoring.
Glad you were rushed to the hospital and are okay!!!

There may well be a bright side to this and you\'ll find a change of diet may help your depression. I certainly hope it does.
